Hi, I'm looking to see my chances at Claremont McKenna College for Early Decision, but I'm also really curious if I could do better in terms of prestige. I like CMC and I would love going there(I believe it is the best education available for me(Liberal Arts, the Ath and a real outlook on life)), but I'm curious because many of my friends want to go to big name schools like Berkley or Williams. Could I fair well in admissions there? If I don't get in ED I may apply there.

** Chances for:**

You are definitely up there with the applicants to the top colleges. I would say that you could probably “do better.” But don’t forget, it’s not about prestige. I just applied ED to one of the Claremonts rather than the big-name private univeristy in my state. Afterwards, I kept thinking I could have done better. But I realized that the Claremont was a better fit for me in so many ways.

You’ve already applied to CMC ED. It is a great school, and people who matter (companies, internships, grad schools) REALLY know it (this is one of the things CMC prides itself on). Wait and see what happens. If you get in, great. If you don’t get in, feel free to add more prestigious schools on your list. Just be careful about which prestigious schools you select - don’t just do the ones your friends are doing, unless they’re a good fit for YOU. In the end, you’re going to have to go to this place for four years, and you want to be happy.

Wow, few schools where a 3.1 would put you in the top 20%, that would not be the case at the very top privates I know, so I’m curious as to where you go.

Colleges do know where kids rank. I’m guessing CMC is just about the right level of reach. Your scores would be very attractive at Berkeley, but in my experience they don’t differentiate GPAs by rigor of school. Hard to tell with the others, I’ve seen them all, except Dartmouth, go considerably below top 20% at top high schools. Applying will be the only way to know.

I’m just curious, if CMC doesn’t come back with an admission offer, would I be able to compete at these schools? Even if I do get in, I’d like to know if I could have gone to some of the schools that are better known.

I’m very confident CMC is the right school for me though. It is far above any other school except possibly Duke.

CMC ED - match
Cornell - low reach
Berkley - match/low reach
Georgetown - low reach
Duke - low reach
Rice - in
Northwestern - match
Dartmouth - reach

try for bigger schools like Penn, Columbia etc. And just for giggles apply to one HYPS also
Applying to colleges is a once in a life time opportunity do not blow it. If you do, you will spend yur entire life wondering ‘what if??’
