ED CMC vs SCEA Yale

I’m deciding between the two: Yale will give me an option to apply RD to other schools, CMC may not give me enough aid. I’d like to see if CMC RD is likely enough that I can feel comfortable applying early to Yale.

ACT: 35 superscore, 33 composite
GPA: 95 weighted (upward trend, 92, 94, 99)
Classes:
Fresh- junior level math, honors english
Soph- AP AB, AP World
Junior- AP BC, AP Bio, AP US, AP Lit
Senior- AP Art History, AP Comp Sci, AP Gov, AP Env Sci

I got 3 B’s first sem of Junior year, all in AP classes and one B second semester.

82 first sem in AP BC, went up to 95 4 on the AP. My teachers writing my rec (it’s the only one she’s writing since it’s a senior class and I have a personal relationship with her)

88 both semesters in AP Lit (she didn’t believe in giving As)

89 in AP Bio first sem, 95 second sem, did a journal club on a graduate paper published in Science (included in guidance rec)

My AP US teacher asked to write my rec so Im sure it’s strong.

Extracurriculars:
Varsity Cross Country and Track (3 years captain, MVP, Coaches Award, Most Improved, multi time county champion, sectional and state qualifier, I coach 2 days a week when my coach is absent)
Sports Liason to SGO (2 years, I created the position)
Borough Student Advisory Council (1 year, we write grants for our schools)
Chancellors Student Advisory council (1 year, alternate)
Lifeguard (2 summers, 45 hours a week)
Photography Classes (1 year outside of school)
My schools dual mission so I spend 3 periods a day doing art an would submit a portfolio to Yale (CMC doesn’t want one)

Hooks:
I had an interview with a Claremont alum who was deeply involved in admissions and we hit it off. I emailed admissions about aid and the Vice President (I assume of admissions) emailed me back on his personal email, shared a story about himself, and told me to call him by his first name so either he’s really friendly or my interview went really well which I feel it did, No one from my school applies here (3 people ever, 1 got in with similar stats but I don’t know about ECs)

I have legacy to Yale, which would only matter if I apply early. Similar people with likewise stats apply and get in, however, some with high stats often get rejected due to (most likely) bad essays and ECs. I have strong Yale Supps.

@katp27 Don’t know about CMC, but regarding Yale, I think you’re overestimating the impact of EA and legacy. Some schools, such as UPENN give a noticeable legacy bump, but only during early. At Yale, to the extent that legacy matters, there is no reason to think it matters more in the early round. Additionally, EA and Legacy applicants have higher average stats and represent a stronger applicant pool as compared to RD/non legacy.

Were you basing your “Similar people with likewise stats apply and get in” on your HS’s Naviance? I ask, as even a 95 UW coming out of the other top NYC publics (HCHS, Stuy, BTech, BxSci…) is not high enough to make Yale a shoo-in. Not sure it is different from a “dual mission” like LaG…

Certainly apply, but remember that Yale is a reach for everyone.
