Did anyone else apply ED? Just finished tonight. Excited for the opportunity. Pretty nervous because of my unweighted GPA and financial need. Had a really bad semester last year with family issues that brought it down. My weighed is a 4.17 and I have taken really hard classes plus my SAT is decent at 2110. I feel like that gives me a chance at least. Also maybe being from Texas will help with regional diversity. Anyway good luck to anyone else that applied!

Also if anyone has insight on how admissions looks at GPA that would be great. My school does weighted so I didn’t even consider UW till I started really looking at colleges. My unweighed dropped to a 3.3 after last semester according to my counselor. It was a 3.6 before that. By the end of this semester it should be at the least 3.4 and 4.3 weighted. Of course that doesn’t mean much in ED but I’ll try to get my mid semester report card in.

Hi I just applied too! I’m so excited and nervous ahh! And hmmm I know that a lot of colleges have their own systems for looking at GPAs and a lot of them recalculate the gpa after you submit your transcript but I’m not sure if colby does this. But when a colby admissions councilor came to my school she said the most important thing they look at is the transcript (grades and rigor of classes). You’re SATs are really great though! And last years ED class had a 47% acceptance rate so we almost have a 50/50 shot of getting in! Good luck to everyone else who applied!!

I saw your other post and it looks like you are in really good shape. I regret not getting involved in honor societies when I had the chance. By the way if you look at the data on their site they tell you ED 1 and 2 results. ED 1 had an acceptance rate of over 54 percent and ED 2 was lower maybe like 39 if I remember right. The 47 percent is the total of both. Not that it’s a huge difference but over 50 percent sounds better! Oh and I saw you visited campus on your other post. I wish I could have but transportation costs aren’t affordable at this time. I’ve probably seen every picture and video I could find though and I love it! What was it like in person though? And also did you check out Bates? I’m leaning towards Bates for ED2 if I’m not lucky enough to get into Colby.

54% sounds a lot better haha thanks for the info!! And omg Colby is so gorgeous! I went to visit all three Maine schools (Bowdoin, Colby, and Bates) and Colby was by far the prettiest! It’s campus is the largest which so there’s a lot of space which I really liked! Compared to Bates Colby felt a lot bigger because of the layout. Bates was much more compact so I thought it felt a little on the small side. Before I went to visit I originally thought I wanted to go to Bates but my Colby tour guide was so amazing and Bate’s science buildings didn’t seem to me to be as up to date (but I only quickly got to go in the rooms so I’m not sure). Also I thought Colby’s dorms were more spacious! And the people at Colby just gave off great vibes, they were all so friendly! Even the surrounding town, Waterville, is not as bad as some people make it out to be. There is a street with cute cafes and restaurants and then another area with larger stores like Walmart. But I also thought Lewsiston was nice… There was definitely more there but Colby still beats Bates for me!!

That’s really great to hear! I hope I’ll be able to see it this spring if I’m admitted. I’m glad it looks good in person and the people are probably the biggest part. I really like the fact that the campus is larger and more rural. I love the outdoors and I feel like I’d fit great in that regard. I also like the cold but I do live in Houston so it’s going to take some adjusting. I’m confident in choosing Colby I just don’t want to get too attached yet and have a back up plan if I don’t get in. But if I do get in I’ll be so thrilled and won’t have any second thoughts. Yeah I’ve heard both towns are old mill towns with some economic problems but I’m sure they’re nice. I bet they’re pretty safe and I’d like to help in the community if I could.

Also did you check out the new science building at Colby? It looks really nice! I was reading about it the other day.

Ugh yeah I know its hard not to get too attached because of the chance of not getting in… I have a family friend who goes to Colby and he said the best part of the school is definitely the people and that he’s made the most amazing friendships there! Everyone at Colby seems to be outdoorsy and adventurous which I love! And I definitely agree the weather will be difficult to adjust to but it seems as if there always are things to do do campus in the winter so it should be fun… I didn’t get to go inside the new building because I visited earlier in the summer before it had opened but I saw it from the outside and it looked so nice!

Have you signed up for an alumni interview? I just had mine last weekend and it was really great! My interviewer is a student at Columbia med school which was awsome because I want to be pre-med. I’m not sure if you’re interested in the sciences but she said Colby prepares you really well for med school and she thinks most of her classes are easy! She also said almost all her friends who applied to grad schools got into their top choices (a lot of Ivies) and that Colby has a really strong reputation. I was a little concerned at first about this but she told me that people loved asking her about Colby when she was applying to med-school and that all her schools knew of it!

No I haven’t but I’m going to right now! I just applied Saturday night and the site says they only allow applicants to request interviews. That sounds awesome though! I’m actually planning on pre-med as well. I’ve heard good things about their science programs from other people too. What’s your intended major? I’m probably doing Biology which is they typical pre-med major but that’s my favorite subject as well.

Oh I was supposed to request an interview by the 15th. Oh well I bet it would have been hard for them to find someone in my area anyway.

Oh no sorry to hear that you didn’t make the deadline! But I’m sure if you really wanted you could always email someone in the admissions office and let them know you are still interested in having one.
And I’m also interested in majoring in bio! And if not bio then I think either biochemistry or nueroscience! I also have heard that their science programs are great (especially bio it’s on of the most popular majors). My interviewer also told me that in her senior year some of her classes once she was in her specialized field only had around 5-8 students which is great! And she did research starting freshman year which is so important especially being premed!

And is Colby well known in your area? Where I live in CT no one from my school has applied since 2006! But there still are a few alumni in the area especially a bunch in NYC

It’s good. I filled out the online application and there was a place for a note so I explained that I missed the deadline and understood if it didn’t work but I said I’d really like to interview if possible. Haha nope only one or two applied and no one got in over the past 8 years. My school is a good size too with over 2500 kids and we have this science magnet so we have a fair amount of kids going to “elite schools.” Most people don’t know about liberal arts schools in general. They’re not household names like Ivy League schools. I like that though and grad schools definitely know about them. Half the schools I’m considering I’ll be the first one to apply to from my school according to the website we use.

I definitely dig the small class sizes and want to do research. I’m considering neuroscience as well! I’d also like to take classes on Psychology and Philosophy for sure. I’d consider minoring in those if it was doable. I’ve heard double majors and minors are really common.

I hope you get the interview!! And what other schools are you applying to?

Thanks! I did! Or at least they responded and gave me a contact. I emailed her so I hope it’ll work.

And too many haha there’s just so many good schools. I have my common app maxed out. I applied to Colorado College already as well as Colby but my chances there are even smaller. I’ll apply to bates, vassar, dickinson, richmond, reed, laffayette, grinnell, macalester, lehigh, wake forest, st. Olaf, trinity, conn college, whitman, skidmore, hamilton, holy cross, Berea, emory(Oxford), sewanee and Brandeis. Also I’ll probably apply to St. John’s New Mexico and I like Haverford and Kenyon a lot but I’m really not liking my chances so I don’t have them on my list for now. Then I’ll apply to state schools that I can get scholarships to. There’s also in state LACs I like a lot like trinity U and austin college. I know that seems ridiculous but I won’t get a chance to visit anywhere and with my GPA I don’t feel like any of them are locks. Plus financial aid is a big concern and I feel like if I’m lucky enough to get into a couple of these schools I’ll have a better chance of affording college. Colby is definitely my top choice though and I hope I won’t have to end up applying to that many because I get in ED. What about you?

Wow that is a lot! I just applied EA to fordham, northeastern, and UVM kinda as safeties. Then if I don’t get into Colby I think I’ll do ED II to Colgate or Hamilton I’m still not sure which one yet. And then I’d apply to Richmond (sister goes here), Bates, UCLA, and Bowdoin RD. But ugh I just hope it all works out with Colby so I won’t have to apply to any more And I’m also applying for financial aid which is one of the reasons I did ED at Colby because they don’t give loans which is soo nice!

And do you know how many people applied ED this year? I was trying to find the info but couldn’t
