Here's me:
Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2220 (750M, 750CR, 720W)
[] SAT II: 730 Math II, 740 Chem
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0 (92%)
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Counsellor says top 5-8%, 300+ person class.
[] Senior Year Course Load: Most difficult available to me.
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Royal Commonwealth Society Essay Competition BC - Commended. TRU Chemistry Contest - 94th Percentile. Nothing else really, I was short in this department.
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Sound/Lighting Crew (student director), track & cross country (top in city), film club (founder), drumming/guitar, scuba diving, photography, t-shirt design, web design, outdoor lazer-tag coordinator.
[] Job/Work Experience: Spent a summer working at a web solutions firm for the new Blackberry database and have done freelance web design.
[] Volunteer/Community service: Random stuff around the school and in the leadership class for my program.
[] Summer Activities: Spent last summer at EPGY at Stanford doing Investigations in Engineering, summer before at University of Washington at a film course.
[] Essays: I felt they got across my personality fairly well, showed my uniqueness. I was about 1000 words though, was bit worried about the length.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Probably both fairly good. One of them really liked me and knew my humour and personality well, the other I've always done exceptionally well in her class, always getting near 100%.
[] Counselor Rec: Surprisingly good, he spoke extremely highly of me.
[] Interview: Not that great, I did not click with the interviewer.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Country (if international applicant): Canada
[] School Type: Public enriched mini program.
[] Ethnicity: White, 3rd generation Canadian.
[] Gender: Male.
[] Hooks: Er, international? Maybe athletics.
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Very into my ECs, essays were good, recommendations good, athletics went extremely well this year.
[] Weaknesses: Average SAT score, below average SAT II scores, interview, awards.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I always felt Mudd was the perfect fit for me. I guess they felt somewhat the reciprocal.
[/ul]General Comments:
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!

Wait what? How'd you get yours already? I bet not having my parents' income tax returns in might delay whether I get notification, but... Would they even ask for that if I wasn't going to get in? Does that mean they're just waiting for that to tell me how much I'd receive when I get the letter? If I wasn't accepted, why would they have asked for that two days ago? I think that means I'm in? What? Question mark?

Perhaps it's because I'm an international - They emailed me my decision. If you're a domestic applicant, they might be mailing you your decision. I honestly have no idea what's up with the tax returns - They haven't contacted me since a few weeks ago when there was a problem with my transcript.

Decision: Deferred

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 800 M, 710 R, 670 W
[] ACT: 36 M 33 R 33 S 31 E
[] SAT II: 800 M2 750 Phys
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.62 or something (higher without Freshmen Year)
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 12% or so
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): 5 on Calc BC and Comp Sci. AB
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): 5 on History SL and 5 on Comp Sci SL
[] Senior Year Course Load: 6 IB with possible Independent Study in Complex Analysis
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Member of team who won Colorado State University Math Day team competition.
[/ul][ b]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
[] Job/Work Experience: None
[] Volunteer/Community service: Tutoring at school as well as stuff in Summer Activities
[] Summer Activities: People to People for three years. Going to Inauguration with them.
[] Essays: Thought two were good. Not sure about last one.
[] Teacher Recommendation: A former professor at HMC; couldn't ask for better.
[] Counselor Rec: Eh, would be better if she wrote now.
[] Additional Rec: Theory of Knowledge teacher. Should be good at recs.
[] Interview: Didn't do one.
[/ul]
Other*[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): Colorado
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Public IB
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: 200k +
[] Hooks (): Former professor wrote letter. Can't think right now really. Calc 2/3 as Junior.
[/ul]
Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Stronger in recent years.
[] Weaknesses: Clubs not started really till recently. Crappy Freshmen year.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: It could be the fact that I didn't have income tax returns in until a couple days ago.
[/ul]
General Comments:* Annoyed at inability of being able to change stuff on common app. Complex Analysis better help. Might be able to get merit aid now. Taking SAT again. Going to try as hard as I can for top 10%. Hope other people's GPAs drop because of Senior year. Blegh. Ugh. Eh. Need to do ToK journals.

I'm calling tomorrow to see if the fact that my tax returns were asked for the day before they sent the letters (and the tax returns were sent after it was sent) was a reason for my deferral. Then, I'm going to "complain" because they were never mentioned on the deadlines section, so I never even knew about them till I was e-mailed about it.

If they know what's good for you, Cider, you're getting in. Hang in there man. Early indecision is tough, but you belong there.

Hey Cider, if I can make a suggestion: Ask your HS guidance counselor to call and inquire on your behalf as to how you can strengthen your application for the "tip." What you say about the tax forms could be the case, as they might not have wanted to grant you admission with no FA if you would qualify for FA. But from everything I've read and heard, this is where your GC can be worth her weight in gold... Admissions folks are sometimes willing to drop hints to GCs that they'd never tell a student or parent.

If it is because of the tax forms, I wouldn't "complain" too vigorously -- that information is pretty clear on their Web site. Aid Application for Early Decision Just get 'em in and pay attention to whatever the GC can find out; then keep your name front and center with frequent, positive, substantive updates. I hope geek_son (admitted) gets to meet you this April!

Thanks for the advice. Although I have a question. Would I ask my counselor to call sometime later and then check back in, or would I ask her to call while I'm there? So I'd want her to ask about the financial aid stuff instead of me?

Also, I had e-mailed the admissions office for my results earlier today when it didn't seem like the mail would get here (snow). I think it would be funny if they had changed it after having received the documents.

I hope I get to meet your son, as well.

Don't try to participate in that phone call or even to listen in. Just ask your GC to call them right away and tell you the outcome... ideally, she might express a little surprise that you weren't accepted right away, then ask what would strengthen your application. If they say something like, "It never hurts to have another recommendation," then you'll know to dig up someone who can write you an especially strong letter. If they say something about waiting to see a trend in your senior grades, then you'll want to be sure to send a new transcript as soon as your excellent fall-semester report card gets factored in. You get the idea.

I think you could call and ask about the financial aid stuff yourself; that's a very specific question that they might be willing to answer outright. Just try to keep the call upbeat. If the financial aid stuff was the reason for the deferral, then you may not have to wait until April for a response.

And yes, the silver lining is that now you should have the opportunity to bump up those test scores for the $10k scholarship. :-)

Good luck!

Does it matter what order these happen in? Or is it whatever?

[/quote]

It's whatever.

Eh, looks like a reason was the last essay was "awkward." I'd think that the fact that the other two were well-written would make that not as important but... Also Freshmen year grades were crap, and they want to make sure I'd end strongly. I'll have only one B in a weighted class and the rest As, so...

They want me to submit another sample of my writing and/or get a recommendation from an English teacher. Now I have to decide which to ask.

Outstanding! One more essay with a little extra spit and polish, and a solid recommendation from an English teacher... that's very concrete advice. Now you know what they're looking for, and you know what you can do to get on the admit list! Go get 'em, Cider!
