yeah ! they deffered me ... would have preffered to be rejected and get on with my life.. oh well... but now ,besides mid year report, what else should i send/do ?
good luck to all fellow defferals, congrats to all acceptes , and to all rejects , i envy you!

If you get involved w/more ec's, send them a resume updated with your new activities. Maybe send in some supplmental material of one of your talents; a sample piece of art? A musical CD? Also, try to get in touch with some people in the department you want to major in, and try to get them to write letters for you. You should check out the "dealing with deferral" thread on the splash page.

i totally expected R....but i got deferred..i don't know if it's good or bad....i don't get it...but hopefully, i'll get in in April...Columbia's still my love...why couldn't the adcoms just see that i love the school so much.....................................................

Focus on the final exam if you have not taken them yet. I was deferred, too, and my finals are next week. I it might help me a little bit if I get all A's in all IB/AP classes.
Let's pray we'll get in in april.

I'm ok with a deferral. All that about how you would prefer a rejection, that's crap, or else you wouldn't have applied ed. There's still hope. Now take advantage of being able to apply to all the other great schools out there.

I don't like it much. Yeah, there's still a chance, but things aren't looking so good. It's this feeling like deferral is like saying you aren't special but we keeped u because whatever.

It's the most confused feeling, not completely dejected yet feeling sick knowing that oh s*** some very overachieving people are going to be applying from my school for regular so the competition is going to be even worse. We need a support group

I really dont see the point of defferal : or you make their cut or u don't why keep you waiting another 4 months??? At least they should give u reason for defferal so u know what to improve... for my part , im going to send in stellar mid year report and that's it ( and maybe ask my interviwer who was very nice to put in a good word for me ? ) I'm not going to beg them to take me as I think i'm worth better than that.. meanwhile i'm sending out 12-15 common apps and 3-5 other apps .. hope to get in somewhere...

btw straight from columbia website : for last year :
" Admit rate for ED defers is 15% in the College and 12% in the Engineering School." whereas RD admit rate is 10.9% so we still have a good chance lol

go48, The point of the deferral is that the C or U really doesn't know the applicant pool coming up. They're saying, "It's a good bet that you'll be competitive with the regular round. At the moment there's nothing so unique about you versus the other ED'ers that applied, but you definitely have a lot going for you in terms of the kinds of students we're looking for in the coming class." (Sorry for being long-winded!)

I think that ED is very brutal & is not for the benefit of the applicant: it's for the benefit of the institution. I think it's an opportunity for them to grab particular students while they can -- students who fits specific "needs" (agendas) of the college that may or may not present themselves in the regular round. That's not a bitter observation, just an observation. They have a guarantee of particular students.

The only thing I don't understand is why people with particularly strong records are being rejected as opposed to deferred. If they just looked like another one of a thousand overachievers (with such difficulty differentiating one from the other equal one), I could see their being pushed to the RD pool. But to reject them sounds as if they're saying, "We definitely DON'T want someone as accomplished as yourself, at any time." (What's THAT about?)

P.S. I did not apply to Columbia in any round: too urban/big for me, though a great U. obviously.

Classicist, about the outright rejections: I know of someone who last year was rejected at Yale EA, accepted into Harvard RD.

It's very difficult but please please please do not fall into the trap of somehow reading admissions decisions as absolute ranked values of worth.

"The only thing I don't understand is why people with particularly strong records are being rejected as opposed to deferred. Why do they flat out reject obviously qualified, suited applicants.. who obviously love the school? I will find out when Monday comes..

either its cause some people ,even overqualified people, just don't fit their criteria or maybe ,although i doubt it , cause of financial aid as in reject the ones we cant pay for and defer the ones who can pay fully without finaid... i think deferal is worse than rejection (btw nyu ed its either in or out no deferals..) cause your stuck, cant apply ed elsewhere and stresed out till april...
anyways, besides a great mid year report , what else can i send them? can i ask my interviwer to put in a good word for me? would that help? is there anything else simple that i can send to improve my chances ( im not inclined to sending 5p letters why i love columbia etc.. ) ?

u need to call columbia.. and ask them what are their reasons .. and genuinely show interest..
haven't u heard about the girl that camped outside of princeton after getting deferred.. and she got in..

u need to do drastic things..

come on deferrees!!! show some initiative!

think of what i woulda done if i got deferred!
i'd have flown up there!!
