Hello. Have any of you been accepted to College of Wooster? If so, did you receive a merit scholarship? If so, may I ask how much and what your stats were. Thanks and good luck! My son applied and we haven't heard yet.

My daughter’s applied EA, but hasn’t heard yet (though she’s heard positive news from OWU, Beloit and McDaniel).

My son currently attends Wooster and likes it a lot. Somehow I remember his hearing from Wooster in December (both acceptance and award letter) and was quite excited, as he received more money from them ($15000) than he ever dreamed possible (and substantially more than from any other school). It brought the cost of attending Wooster to the point where he can attend without going into debt.

The best part is that he has said that even without the award, Wooster would still have been the right choice for him. He works hard, and is surrounded by people who study seriously and live playfully – a rare combination.

Good luck.

I was looking on the Wooster admin portal online and it said it would let us know for EA on or before the 15th, but the website said on Jan 15. I have a feeling they wont send it out until the 15th. I looked on the acceptance Facebook page too. Only ED students in the group. However, I did get an email from the Financial aid office today saying fill out the Wooster Financial aid papers so you can get the most money back. Do you think they sent it to everyone? or just the kids that got in?

Bet my D who applied EA that she would hear no later than today. Looking like she’ll be getting $20 from me to buy the celebratory, or consolatory, cocoa tomorrow. Hopefully no later than tomorrow…

So I called admissions office and asked when they were sending the letters in the mail. They said they were sending them out tomorrow. Sadly, Sunday and Monday (MLK day) there will be no mail. I asked if they were posting admissions on their portal and they told me they were not going to post it on the portal until one week after acceptences have been sent in the mail. They wanted the students to get the letter first. I had my hopes up for tomorrow!

aduck22- Thanks for checking this out. I was wondering how they would be dealing with the 15th falling on a Saturday.

The College of Wooster did the same thing for the ED kids this year. They did not mail until December 15th. My daughter’s letter arrived on December 18th. It was good news. She is thrilled to be attending the College of Wooster. Good luck to everyone! We are still going through the waiting game with her twin brother.

Just received an email from Wooster that contains my acceptance letter and scholarship info.
I got in with 20,500 dean’s scholarship.
I think they are going to mail all the letters instead of emailing us about the results. But I’m an international student, mail normally takes too long to get here. I think that’s the reason my couselor is kind enough to scan the letters and email them to me before mail arrives.

Good Luck, guys!

I applied EA and got accepted with 22k. Anybody know if this is the final financial aid decision? because i asked more than this.

I applied EA. Acceptance letter today.
How much aid does Wooster give beyond their merit scholarships?

If you applied for financial aid and have a greater need than the amount of your scholarship they will give you additional aid (though it may be in the form of loan or work study). They may have said something in your acceptance letter about financial aid award letter to follow. Hope that helps…btw…where are you located - I know some students still waiting for their letters and as of today they have not heard.

Hi everyone
My DD got her EA acceptance today in Colorado with a nice merit award. We have not been able to visit yet as I told her her it was too far to go without an acceptance but we are very happy with the merit money and hope to visit soon. She has a friend from high school who is a COW freshman who is very happy. Any comments from parents or students very welcome for those of us “pretty far away”.

just curious the money that came in with admission letter, is that merit scholarship or financial aid?
because mine only said it’s dean’s award, but the next letter said your aid would not be changed

Poppy,

D did an overnight in October. She loved the campus, the students and the overall learning environment at Wooster. D had looked at a lot of other colleges but after visiting Wooster she applied ED. There is a really nice feeling on this campus. I hope you take a chance to visit. We are from CT and found the campus was pretty diverse for a small college in Ohio. It was an eight hour drive for us so she will be flying in and out of Cleveland/Akron for holidays. There are shuttles to both airports. Hope this helps! Good luck with your decision.

My daughter just heard – Success, with a generous dean’s award. Since my son currently attends (and is quite happy there – see other threads in the Wooster discussion for details), she’s unlikely to attend as well, but she felt really good about the whole process.

Congratulations to all considering attending Woo next year. It’s a great school – perfect for the student wanting the “collegy” experience of local traditions, personal attention from professors, and intellectual rigor.

We live “far away”, in New England. As to holiday transportation, flights to CLE/CAK are easy to obtain, but transportation from the airport to the college can be minor pain, as the college is an hour drive from either airport. But making those kinds of arrangements are part of their (and our) growing up process, so in the end, it’s all good.

A dean’s award is a merit scholarship. Financial aid is separate, but when the school balances the family’s contribution with the cost of attendance and looks for ways to bridge the gap in financial aid, the “cost of attendance” figure includes a deduction of the dean’s award (or other scholarship) and the aid gets adjusted accordingly.

In other words, if the tuition/room/board/books/supplies/transportation cost is $48000 and the dean’s award is $13000, than the “cost of attendance” figure is $35000, not $48000, and it will be the $35000 figure that the financial aid office uses as the figure to meet.

Hope this helps

I just got accepted with $15,000! I’m in Massachusetts.

My d was accepted with a generous Dean’s award. She hasn’t visited yet but will probably try to visit soon. She did visit and really liked Hampshire College (had a great experience sitting in on a class there). Does anyone have a feel for the similarities or differences of these schools? Thanks!

I got my letter today with a $17,500 Dean’s Award! Its weird it took this long and I’m just an hour or so north of it…

Thanks for the clarification about financial aid. I understand the process but was just curious at how close COW came to meeting the gap between the EFC and COA.

@KaiserinSisi also from MA.

@cocoa123 I’m also looking at Hampshire as well as COW. I have yet to visit COW. Trying to schedule a visit in between snow storms! I spoke to a friend who graduated from COW several years ago. She said the school was much more diverse with different types of people (preppy, alternative, jock, etc.). From what I’ve heard about Hampshire it’s much more homogeneous. But not having attended either school, I don’t know much more than you do. ;)
