Ed/ed1/ed2

I was wondering how these three options work. Is it set up so that you can do ED or ED1, find out if you're admitted to that school, and if rejected or deferred, apply ED2? Does it differ by school? So basically my question is can you apply ED1 and ED2 if you are not accepted at the first?

Thanks
Dan

If you are deferred in ED, then they will automatically reconsider you for Regular decision. If you are rejected in ED, you definitely will not be able to re-apply in any way to that school for at least 1 calendar year. It only differs by school in the way that some defer candidates, some reject candidates, and some do one or the other exclusively.

I don't think you quite understood my question. Here's an example that will hopefully clarify it.

Can you apply to Columbia ED, and if rejected or deferred by December 15, then apply to a school with ED2 such as Wesleyan?

Yes, that's exactly what ED 2 is for. If deferred from Columbia ED, you can apply ED2 anywhere you like. Of course, if you are admitted ED2, then you must go there, even if Columbia admits you after deferral - it's just as binding as ED1.

If you're rejected ED1, same scenario, except of course Columbia is out of the picture.
