Ok, so I am confused.
I applied ED, and my understanding was that I would not get any financial aid information until after I submit the fafsa next calendar year, because that is when it comes out. But I was checking Esther, and it says that if I want Fin Aid information with my ED decision, I have to have the paperwork in by Nov 15. Well obviously that deadline is passed, but what does that mean? What paperwork could I have done? And should I be doing?

Rice will give an estimate of need-based financial aid to all ED applicants IF they “Submit CSS PROFILE to CSS and Submit 2009 income tax and W-2 forms to Rice by Nov. 15, 2010” (this statement is in the freshman application instructions). If you miss that deadline I guess you will have to wait until April to get any FA information.

It also means that if you get in, you need to commit to Rice by Jan 2nd by withdrawing all other applications. You will be committed to Rice without any recourse financially, if I am not mistaken.

Send an email to both admissions and the financial aid office explaining your situation. Get the paperwork in as soon as possible. I cannot imagine you will have to wait until the RD financial aid notifications, but it will be delayed.

Thank you Tilgaham for your concern, but I am fine not getting the info until later. My EFC is (ridiculously) high, so I am basically planning on relying on outside scholarships. I will still apply for aid, but its practically a formality for me.

EDIT-
I was simply concerned that I would not be able to apply for aid at all. So do I need to email them and do the forms asap just to qualify for aid, or can I wait until I get the decision?

It is a statement of earnings. It declares your income, federal taxes, deductions from work etc. If you work, you will get one from your job. Rice will need your parents tax returns etc. to compute aid.

We received a brochure about financial aid at Rice. It shows a graph stating your income and rice financial packages, it is quite different from the FASFA calculations. Does anyone know if they give better financial packages than other schools? The brochure shows making $160,000 a year still gets you $12-$15K for financial aid. Does anyone have any information about this?

Also, any outside scholarships reduce the student loan amounts - so even a modest $1500 a year scholarship from the Lions Club or PTA or ? means that the student graduates with only $4000 in loans… and the work/study component is very, very modest - $1800 is easily doable in 6-10 hours of work per week.

Merit is aid SOLELY based on merit. This means that you can be Bill Gates’ son and still get a scholarship.

No need based aid means you will not get any money guaranteed unless you qualify for merit aid. I believe merit aid is given out with the ED admission packet.
