If first quarter grades are reported (we start school really early) are they reviewed for ED? How important are they?

I just answered this question on the Hopkins Forums:
Hopkins Forums -> Early Decision Questions

First quarter grades can often be quite helpful when rendering decisions for ED applicants. If the Admissions Committee feels we need a student's most recent senior grades, we will contact the applicant's guidance counselor to get the grades -- that is how important they can be.
