ED for me?

Yes, before anyone says anything, this is my second thread like this. It's just that the application deadline is slowly coming closer, and I am seriously worried. Like I said before, my GPA is a 3.64ish, and I have taken or will have taken the following ap's by the end of senior year- Calc BC, Statistics, Macro, Spanish, US History, Psychology, Language, Literature, Biology, Physics B, Physics C, Chemistry. I have gotten a mix of 5's and 4's on my AP exams. MY SAT score is 2170 (760M, 740W, 670CR). I am planning to retake it in November, but that isnt going to help my ED application for Tufts, right? Also, I am taking ACT's in October. Another side question that I have is is it worth it to take the ACT's? Okay, ummm, what else...Sat II's- Math IC-740, Chem-740, Bio-800...I am going to take Physics and IIC in October and hopefully will get 800's on both. Extracurriculars- I play basketball, football, and lacrosse. I have been a starting varsity lacrosse player since 10th grade. I wish to continue playing lacrosse in college (hopefully for Tufts). Volunteered in New Orleans with Habitat for Humanity for one week (I am from NY). Volunteered in hospital and library. Currently, I am interning at a hospital with a doctor. I am members of the following clubs- MSA, WAC, Science Olympiads, Math Olympiads, Diversity Club. I have participated and won medals for Math and Science Fair. Ummm...what else...I think that's it...If you need any more info, please ask. Finally, what, realistically, are my chances of Tufts EDI?

Your chances are very solid for ED, although your GPA is low (I hope that's unweighted). You are very well-rounded and your scores are excellent, so that will all help.

If you want to ensure that Tufts will see your SAT score from November, then apply ED II. You'll have the same shot as ED I (because you're demonstrating your committment to go there if accepted) but have a bit more time to fill out applications.

I would only suggest ED I if you know that you can afford to go once you get in and you don't need a second round of grades to help you out.

Thanks, yeah it is unweighted. Are you positive that the chances for ED II and ED I are the same? If they are, I'm sure I'll go with ED II.

About as positive as I can be; they are both binding, so the school has the benefit of taking students who are certain that they want to go there. A lot of people I know who did EDII and got in (i.e. my fellow alums) did it either because they applied somewhere else EDI and didn't get in, or, more commonly, they simply were not prepared to commit to a school by the middle of October and needed a few more months.

If you are concerned, I would strongly, strongly suggest saying that you applied EDII because you wanted your second round of SAT scores to be in your app. I am sure that Tufts sees this a lot and won't hold it against you. :) If you do a "Why Tufts" essay or a cover letter, you could mention that Tufts has been your first choice for a long time, but, on the advice of current students and alums, you chose to apply ED II because you wanted your second round of SAT scores to be on your app. Two sentences, nothing more, and you'll have it all explained. (Also, mentioning that you've spoken to current students and alumnae is very helpful - you've done your research.)

The only thing is that EDI may defer to RD but EDII may not - check on that.

Thanks a lot. I think I'm headed towards EDII. The only reason why I still want to do EDI is kind of because I just want to get this whole thing over with and be able to enjoy senior year a little bit. I don't know if that is enough reason to do EDI, though. Also, I have to check into whether or not EDII defers into RD. Thanks again.

Can anyone else give me some advice?

What kind of additional advice are you looking for?

Well, advice on whether or not Early Decision would be a good one for me. I mean I want to go to Tufts. If I don't apply ED here, I won't apply ED anywhere. I was wondering if you guys think that by applying ED I have a good shot at going to Tufts, I guess.

If Tufts is far and away your first choice, I don't see any reason why you should not apply ED. Go for it. If this is your dream school, show them. Let us know what you decide to do!

I will gladly tell once I decide. I have a question about that early assurance medical program where you apply to Tufts' med school after freshman year. How selective is it? What other information do you guys know about it?

I'm not positive, but I think the admission rate for EDI might be slightly higher than EDII only because EDI is definitely the applicants first choice, while EDII is either the first or second (since a lot would use EDII if they didn't get into his/her first choice EDI). However, both give MAJOR edge over regular decision especially bc Tufts is doing EVERYTHING it can to combat Tufts Syndrome.

Or a more talented group applies ED I.

The only place that Tufts needs to combat Tufts Syndrome is in the eyes of people who are too silly to realize what a great school it is. I had NEVER heard of it until after I graduated. The admins laughed when someone mentioned it at an alum interviewer event.

Okay, I received my transcript last week. My final junior year GPA is a 3.62 unweightedand 3.8067 weighted. Yeah, so my grades aren't as high as I had originally thought they were. What do you guys suggest I do to increase my chances?

About 70+% of the students are given an interview if they have a 3.5 and above and satisfy the criterion and from those numbers 70+% are given a spot into the medical school. The chances look very good for those who can make it.

Oh that sounds really good. How would you compare Tufts against schools like Brandeis and Boston College because I think that both colleges are part of that early assurance medical program at Tufts med school.

Brandeis and BC are mostly safety schools for Tufts students. Brandeis is definitely better than BC.

Okay, I think I am going to apply EDI to Tufts. Thanks for all the help guys. I just need a little more. For my essay, I was wondering if it was too cliche to write about a religious leap of faith that I had made last year ago and the affects it has had on my life and decisions I have made thus far. Also, does my major affect my chances of getting in? For example, will becoming an economics major help me more than telling Tufts I want to be a pre med major? Thanks!

I have another question...what if my sister is in college now, and I have a younger brother who is going to be in college in 3 years...how much financial aid would i get?

Nothing is cliched if it's true. Just write well.

Stating an intending major doesn't affect your chances of being accepted. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the only thing that affects your acceptance is if you apply for the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences or the College of Engineering.

As far as financial aid, if you're accepted, the financial aid officers will do everything possible to make it easy(ier) for you to come here.

Thanks a lot. So which has a higher acceptance rate, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences or the College of Engineering?
