You probably don't need the ED tip. You are black, and have strong scores, particularly for a black person. You also plan to major in engineering, a field in which most colleges are seeking high stat black students like you. The fact that you're female is another plus. Virtually all colleges are looking to attract qualified females into engineering and the hard sciences.

If $ is at all a consideration, my advice is to apply regular and to also apply to other colleges where you're likely to be in consideration for merit aid, too. Then, if you get into Wash U but want more $, you'll be in a position to negotiate.

The fact that Wash U presumably flew you in indicates that they already are extremely interested in you. You don't need to bother with ED, which would probably make them very, very happy, but shut out other options for you.

There are only a couple of hundred black students in the US with scores as high as yours (you can get the exact # in a 2003 article that was in The Washington Post. For a couple of bucks, you can buy the article from their archives), so realize that you're in a highly desired category, and don't narrow your options early.

I gave similar advice to my son, who also was at Discovery weekend.

thank you. the whole process right now feels overwhelming and i'm looking for tips and suggestions from anyone who can help. thank you again.

amu, I agree with NSM. I would just add that you should also apply for the merit scholarships at WashU. You look strong for some of them and they are fantastic if you can get one. Look on their website to see what there is. Also, check the threads here for one about the Danforth scholarship for which, I believe your school needs to send a recommendation. For some reason the Danforth isn't listed on the website. (Just remembered the thread wasn't titled Danforth-the OP had the wrong name) Good luck. It's a great school. DD is a very happy sophomore.

Here is the thread:
