My D applied ED II, and she was wondering if anyone else on CC has done the same thing. If so, we would like to hear from you regarding why you chose Smith, what other options you had, etc. Isn't waiting for the letter of acceptance wonderful?

I have an on-line friend whose D applied ED II and he's more nervous than a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.

Somehow, I'm guessing this post isn't among my most helfpul.

TD, have him send me a message, and we can commiserate together.

BJM8...okay...send yourself a message. It'll be interesting to see if you can PM yourself. :)

(This is definitely among my least useful posts ever.)

But seriously, I think the absolute number of ED II applicants is fairly low. Finding another is like finding a four-leaf clover.

LOL O.K., now I feel STUPID, Thanks!! Here I am thinking you're being serious...I should have known better. I owe you one! I can't wait to meet you as I think our personalities are very similar. But...you really got me on that one. Now, what's my email address again? Is ED II really that small a number? I'm sorry, I didn't realize that.

From the Common Data Set for 2004-2005, 196 admittees were ED out of 696 total.

I'd have to imagine that the bulk of those were ED I, with maybe 50-75 being ED II.

Btw, I'm often serious. Sometimes it's just hard to tell.

{{Isn't waiting for the letter of acceptance wonderful?}}

Didn't you get a pin # to access the decision online? Maybe they dont notify ED apps online. You should ask though.

Bjm8, I know its hard waiting but trust me, your daughter will be accepted.

Thanks RLT...My D not receive a pin for Smith, so I'm concluding that all acceptances are via snail mail.

I'm very cautious on these boards about saying "You're in," considering them generally to be among the most ill-advised words you can utter to anyone. But in this case I'll make an exception and join the queue with RLT. I think it's a formality.

AHHHH...we sure hope so! If you think I'm excited, you should see her. She feels that Smith is such a great fit for her, and is so looking forward to attending. Dinner hasn't been the same since she's applied; it's all she talks about.

BJM, look at how much I talk about Smith and it's two years later. Or, fwiw, that D still talks about Smith. For many, it's an exciting place to be. For me, having my D there feels like one of those rare five-cherries-in-a-row moments. (Funny, I don't think I've dropped $10 in a slot machine in my entire life...an ill-suited metaphor.)

She checked in today, calling from Hartford while waiting for the shuttle. She's already getting old...sleeping on the floor of a friend's dorm at U/Chicago got to her a little bit.

TD...to put you on the spot...what it is exactly that makes you feel so good about Smith? If you had to choose two or three things at the top of your list, what would they be? Just curious, because for me it was the strong science and dance programs, the potential for student research early on, size, and the advisory program. And of course...the Campus...the beautiful campus. Since you have been involved for two years now, your perceptions are, I'm sure, somewhat different from mine as a potential parent of a Smithie.

the things i valued most about smith:

amazing faculty!
opportunities for independent research
great facilities (particularly the library system)
funding and support for personal projects--PRAXIS, funding from the dean of the college--whatever you want to do, smith can help you make it work. i spent a semester at documentary school; had two internships in new york; and received funding to go to an academic conference in north carolina. to name a few.

Wow! Thanks for respondingto this post. Seems like you are (were) very happy with your Smith experiences; seems to be the trend of those who attend. Nice to hear about the amazing faculty as well. My D is very anxious to hear about acceptance, and is already pouring through the course catalog for interesting courses and profs.

Anyone else want to say what those things are that made Smith stand out for you?

Well, !@#$%!^&!.

The system had a cramp and they had to re-set it to a time of three days ago, losing all the messages (including PM's) in the interim, including that wonderfully succinct message I sent about Smith. I really wanted to keep that. !@#$%^&*!!!!

{{My D is very anxious to hear about acceptance, and is already pouring through the course catalog for interesting courses and profs.}}

Pay close attention to when certain courses are offered, some are spring or fall only. And if you really want/need a course but dont have the perquisite, it could be a year before youre able to take it again. Some majors arent as much of an issue as others, however; in pre-med it can make a world of difference having the correct courses completed for the MCAT

I lost TD's wonderful explanation of why smith? Try again TD, try again! I didn't realize we would lose PM's as well. This *&%#!

Did anyone--a lurker maybe?--either copy the post or get some sort of e-mail with my "Why Smith?" post in it. I could attempt to recreate it but I liked what I wrote before.

Sorry TD...I don't see it coming back. I believe we were talking about why students and parents love Smith. What were the one or two factors that made you decide on them if you were a new student, and if you are a current student, what is it that keeps you there?
