Is he from a non northeast state? Is he first generation? Did he make all state in tennis? Is he a legacy?

If not my bet is he doesn’t quite make it.

PS: how could he be JV Captain but be 4 years varsity tennis? Was that a typo?

PSS: Guidance councilor at my D’s public HS said nobody from Ds school ever gets into Midd because we are as massachusetts school so the fact that we are from the under represented Western part of the state doesn’t equal stat diversity for them. She spoke with MIDD admissiuons rep and was told Mass applicants all need a “hook”.

My D is a top athlete as well that is “A- Band” academically to use recuiting terminology- so we are hopefull that is her “hook” .

For what its worth the counselor says my D is her “test case” and that if she doesn’t get in nobody from her school ever will.

I hope she gets in. The process is nerve wracking and although I know she will do well wherever she goes I’d just like the process to be over.

We have had graduates from our school recently that got accepted to Middlebury so maybe we are okay there. I realize that it’s a reach school for him although I don’t think he thinks so. We was jv captain on tennis because in his junior year he played both jv and varsity but was elected by the jv team to lead it.
We are from New Jersey. Hoping for the best outcome!

If he is continuing to participate in music, he might consider sending in a recording of him playing (looks like he’s either saxophone, trumpet, trombone, or percussion). If he’s anything but saxophone, he could send in a tape to be sent to the orchestra director, or if he’s saxophone (or any other listed) and wants to continue jazz, he could send the tape to the jazz band organizer. The conductors will lobby for bubble students if they want them in the musical groups, so this might improve chances.

Not to freak you out but 4 years ago my S was rejected from Midd:

2350 SATs top 10% of class 7 APs. 2 time state singles tennis semifinalist and soccer star… etc. One strike was weak community service also said he didn’t want to play sports in College.

Tough to get into Midd if you are from Mass. We are realistic with my D - almost everybody is on the bubble.

Staple, I hope your S landed somewhere he was/is happy.

My S got wait-listed with 4.0 IB top 5% 800cr 760m 690 cw, all SAT2s above 740, and all kinds of state awards and leadership positions, ran track and xc but not interested in college sports. It was a tough April for him with wait listed at Midd, Harvard(why he didn’t apply ED), Dartmouth, Amherst, Tufts, and rejected by Princeton and Williams. He was one of 40 to get off the wait list, and is very happy at Midd. We feel very lucky.

What some of these very bright children don’t realize is that having stats better than the average for the college does not guarantee admission. It just means you are one of the thousand or so qualified for a very few slots.

Good luck to you all, and be sure to have back up plans!

Thanks for all the input! Good dose of reality…! I mentioned to my son to perhaps make a tape of his trumpet playing and he wasn’t sure about it. I think we are at the end of thinking about this stuff for a while…
