ED II: Gettysburg vs. Bucknell vs. Trinity vs. Bates

Honestly, I’m in the middle of that.

I have a friend at Gettysburg who’s in the LGBTQ community, and she says campus feels liberal (with the exception of one or two political groups).

Nothing like first hand interactions. Good luck (and let us know what you find out and decide)!

I definitely wouldn’t describe Dickinson as fervently liberal. D’son and G’burg have many commonalities and a lot of students apply to both.

Certainly a tough choice.

Clark offers a free, accelerated masters degree for students who finished junior year with a. 3.4+.

Meanwhile, I worry that UCONN won’t provide a lot of advising and help for graduate school advising. Are these concerns legitimate or will UCONN provide the advising and help that I need?

I’ve read plenty dissatisfied with advising at large publics and small privates. If the student can follow the course sequence, advising is a nice to have. But in the end relying on yourself is better. In other words, it’s not a reason not to choose a school. It is a nice to have.

Grad school advising is mainly important for med school applicants. Is med school in the cards? If so, I’d probably go for an LAC for sure.

What about costs? What’s your EFC for each college? I know you mentioned earlier that you can do $30-40k a year. Have you broken that down? Will any of those schools be very expensive for you? I’d eliminate anything too pricey.

EFC is above 50K.

30-40K is preferable for tuition, though.

UCONN and Gettysburg fit into that range. Dickinson, Clark, and Trinity are a little higher, but still under the EFC and I haven’t even attempted to appeal any aid, yet.

I would like to consider med/health graduate studies as an option—but it is not a definite.

You need to do that, right away. They need time too, and the clock is ticking. You might be able to get more out of Dickinson if they are your top choice. You can ask your parent to talk to the FA office, and give them proof of Gettysburg’s offer.

Oh boy, this is getting interesting.

Syracuse just came back with news that I won a 20K scholarship (related to the school that I was admitted to).

This puts Syracuse, normally a very expensive school, within 6K of UCONN.

Thoughts on UCONN vs. Syracuse?

Congrats - help me out again as the title is Gettysburg, Bucknell, Trinity.

So are you now onto just UCONN and SU?

Environmental Science?

UCONN, Gburg, SU.

(Based on finances).

Earth Science major.

Where do you feel most comfortable? Does one have an area of study that interests you more than another?

Personally for that major - don’t think it matters where you go.

Gettysburg is a hit or miss, IMO. If I fit into the culture, it works. If not…meh.

UCONN is a solid choice, of course. Syracuse and UCONN are similar, with SU being a city school (and private—but you’re a grad of SU, correct?).

Syracuse seems to have more “prestige,” but I’m pretty sure that’s just what I think. A lot of my friends say that UCONN has more “prestige,” but it’s probably a draw between the three.

All have my extracurriculars. Little worried about SU’s intense Greek scene, though.

UCONN and SU are both fine.

I wouldn’t say they are similar.

SU is big into greek and is big in journalism and social sciences. etc.

Sounds like UCONN is better for you.

PS - you are going to school, not your friends.

PPS - you should go to where you are comfortable…don’t worry about the reputation (especially in this major).

PPPS - don’t forget, scholarships have requirements - make sure you are easily able to keep the $20K all four years.

I am a proud SU alum…1990 - but honestly, if i had to do it again, i’d have gone to a different school. It’s a long time ago - and I did Newhouse - it wasn’t all that - and my MBA at a public (ranked #40 at the time) was a far better education although I root for the Orange.

If I threw in a social science double major, would that change anything?

I also worry about advising and research opportunities—since I’m not in honors at UCONN.

Repeat. Go to the school that you felt most comfortable at. You need to be there four years. Day after day after day.

None of these three will give you a known advantage, nor disadvantage vs the other.

Going to SU does not guarantee anyone success, similarly to the other two.

Btw SU and UCONN are literally at a tie in US News. 59 vs 63.

In niche ranks Syracuse is 7 and 10 for Greek and party. UConn isn’t close.

Well… where did you choose? Sorry for jumping on at the last minute, but I’ve been following along and have been really curious.
