this is probably a very naive and stupid question… but what is ED II exactly and what is the purpose/benefits of it?

ED II is the same as ED except the dates are later. Some colleges have two sets of ED's. The advantage to you is that you can wait a little longer before applying to your 1st choice school.

Don't apply ED if you also plan to apply from finan aid since you give up your ability to compare FA packages.

what if your rejected to the school you applied ED II to? are you screwed over because its too late to apply to any other schools???

The term, ED, by itself does not restrict your ability to apply to other schools. It depends on the college. Some colleges will say that if you apply ED, you can't apply anywhere else. Some colleges will say that if you apply ED, you can still apply to other colleges under EA, SCEA, or Rolling admissions. Of course, if they accept you under ED, you have to retract your application at the other colleges. You have to read the fine print carefully at all of the colleges to make sure that you are not violating any of the rules at any of them. (Some colleges won't let you apply EA if you are applying ED anywhere else.) I'm not an expert on EDII, but I imagine the college would let you apply RD wherever you wanted with the understanding that their EDII acceptance decision was binding.

Don't apply ED if you also plan to apply from finan aid since you give up your ability to compare FA packages, and you may be obligated to pay full price at the ED college.
