ed-ing dartmouth

Does applying early decision to dartmouth gave any special boost in admissions because people who would be choosing dartmouth as an second choice after HYPSM would be cut out of the picture.

At the info session, the regional rep mentioned that non-hooked applicants, (i.e., not athletes, not related to Bill Gates), have a slightly higher percentage acceptance rate ED than in RD, but she said it was only a couple of "percentage points higher."

Good luck.

ankit! Man its not about getting the 'boost' Just do your college research well and think apply ED to the college that fits you.

Good Luck!

i know that dartmouth fits me, its just a matter of there is really any point to applying ed besides the earlier notification date.

Goankit, be certain that finances will not play any role in your decision. A school like Dart should offer you virtually the same package regardless of when you apply, but really there is no absolute guarantee of that. ALso another school might offer an even better package.

Also, many people change greatly during senior year, so you definitely should give this a lot of thought over the next few months.

Having said all that, my D was an ED applicant, and other than a few minutes of "what if" in April, just a fleeting desire to wonder how well she would have done, she never looked back after Dec. It made for a very, very pleasant senior year for her, after a rough junior year.

Ditto what Cangel said, regarding my son. There was a moment after he was accepted at Dartmouth in December of, "Gee, I'll never know if I could have been accepted at College A or B . . . ." But then that was it.

The lack of stress over the next few months was priceless.

I think you should ea somewhere really easy to get in, like chicago, so you have a good-ish place to fall back on should everything fail. Then apply rd to dartmouth. This'll take a lot of pressure off you second semester senior year :-)

so the only benefit is really the earlier notification date, not any boost in admissions

nope. If you read thedartmouth.com they have clearly mentioned there if a student can get in during ED then he will be accepted during the RD round too. So its just binding and shows your interest. But then in the end you dont want to say, what if I had got into <some university=""> ;)</some>

Ditto. I think if there was any fleeting second thoughts, it was the parents who thought 'what if,' not my son.

However, I disagree with ajayc. The Office of Admissions clearly indicates that ED apps receive a small boost over RD apps. And, while the College claims to provide the exact same finaid package ED or RD (and I believe that to be true), you will lose the ability to compare packages and, ahem, 'negotiate'.

Yeah I realized I was wrong there. Ooops sorry :(

I think the acceptance rate is high just because the number of apps are less compared to the applications recieved during the RD round. But yes your app gets more attention :p

Good Luck, mate!

Also, if you look at the average SAT scores from ED, they are slightly lower than those from RD. That's largely because ED is when they get a lot of their recruited athletes, but I still don't think it's just linked to the fact that there are fewer applications, but also to the fact that they're more likely to admit someone who is definitely coming, because it's good for their yield rate.

yep but they are not going to take everyone and anyone! You got to have something on your app ;)

well i mean, yeah, but that wasn't what i was saying. of course they won't take anyone and everyone. you were saying that there isn't a boost from ED and attributed the higher acceptance rate to fewer applications, and i disagree. i think there is definitely a boost from applying ED and the OP should keep this in mind when applying.

come on tuck I am just kidding around, mate! :)
