Got in today! Got an email from the School of Communication Director, then tackled the mailman for my letter. Like CaxMax said, this is the best Christmas present ever!! Congrats to those who got in, and good luck to those still waiting. I never received a call and I live in New Jersey.

Our package had financial aid award on it but no merit and D was asked to join University College?

Wondering if anyone got into the Honors Program or a Merit Scholarship?

Did everyone get admitted to the school/major that they applied? D’s says undeclared when she applied as a International Studies major. What gives?

I GOT IN!!! See everyone next year. I was so scared after not receiving that phone call. Mine says nothing about merit either. I assume that happens later. YAY.

@pushydad

Yes I got into the school I applied to, its probably a mistake considering that AU explicitley says that you apply to the university as a whole and not to a specific college, I’m sure if you contact them tomorrow it will get straightened out

Congrats to the class of 2017. When my daughter was accepted two years ago, she received her merit award and honors acceptance in a separate packet around two weeks later. She applied regular decision.

If you receive an offer for University College you are not admitted into Honors; however, you can apply for honors after your first year. You still qualify for a merit scholarship but the highest merit awards go to those admitted into the Honors program.

congratulations! did the package come special delivery or just regular mail?

thanks for the info. have a great time at AU!

Regular mail

So University College Program is a good thing? I read a description that made it sound a little like a remedial program.

Also I requested to join the group but have not been added yet. Can whoever controls the fb group accept my request? Thanks all!

LunaLongbottom - first off congratulations! I know you were really stressing the other day and I am really glad it worked out for you. A lot of students enjoy University College. First you select one of the available University College groups that you are interested in (you have a choice of several). Then you take a course with other students that have selected the same topic. You also live in the same dorm as these students so you have an instant group of friends with the same interest.

Luna,

congrats! So happy for you.

My son did the University College …it’s a great way of meeting students with academic interests similar to yours. Actually, he made his best friends from the program. The UCs are not in the least intended to be remedial…they are intended only to enrich the college experience.

Although there is a definite academic benefit. Unless things have changed since my son was a freshman (he is a senior now), the RA of the University College interest group is also the TA in the class, and the group lives together in a hall on one of the dorm floors. You need help? The TA is right there. You need motivation to study? You’ve got a built in study group. Also, the RA/TA is sometimes helpful in “guiding” the first semester students toward effective study techniques…that smart students then apply to their other classes as well.

Pushydad, not sure what happened with your daughter’s acceptance…it looks like there was an input error in drafting her letter (not with her being admitted).

I’m sure a quick call could get the situation straightened out, because admissions are actually to AU as a whole and not really to any specific major or division, although such is mentioned in the letter. If the admissions office doesn’t want to reissue her letter, she can just change majors/schools/whatever when she comes to campus for orientation, or in the fall. It won’t make any difference in her registration or anything else.

I’m just sorry it seems to be dimming her enjoyment of her acceptance.

My D participated in a University College when she was a freshman and loved it. She made great friends with similar interests. She still shares an apartment with 2 of them. D was also a TA/RA for the same University College her sophomore year. She lived with the freshmen and was able to assist them with classwork, bureaucracy issues, etc. One of her duties was planning outings in DC (some related to the classwork, some not) for every Wednesday. I think she would definitely recommend the UC for any freshman.

Anyone here that has been accepted and is ROTC?

Did anyone get merit awards with package? Anyone else hoping to see it and did not? Called admissions and was told that it should be included in the package if there was one. If there is none then you were considered but not offered one

DS’ friend received his merit award with his acceptance letter. I don’t know if the letter stated the amount, but his letter stated the name of the award (Presidential I think).

When my daughter got in last year, she received the merit award at the same time as the acceptance, but it was regular decision. In terms of merit awards, my daughter got a fairly large Presidential Scholarship but was not asked to be in Honors program, so they aren’t mutually exclusive. She did decide to do University College and it was one of the best decisions she ever made. The older student TA/ Mentor was a huge resource and they got to do so many fun things out in the city! She also really enjoyed the Freshman Service Experience during Welcome week. I would highly recommend UC to incoming students.

The Presidential Award is the highest merit scholarship. When my DS applied it was $27,500 a year. Three years later when my DD applied, it was $20,000 a year. A disappointment compared to what my son was offered but still a good hunk of change. Don’t know what the Presidential is this year.

no word from admissions, so I had pretty much assumed a deferral or denial was in the works, but then the package arrived on Friday! sooo happy and excited! thanks to all of you for your advice and moral support. see you at AU next year!
