ED or ID/RD?

SAT-800v 640m
APs-Spanish 5, English Comp 5, U.S History 5 (im gonna take govt/eco test this year)
havent taken SAT IIs yet but i think ill get 700+
rank: 1/412
gpa 4.2 weighted (im not sure unweighted)
4 years of varsity golf (district champs 3 years in a row)
NHS member
im half caucasian and half asian (pakistani)
won an essay contest judged by benazir bhutto
ive played the piano for about 9 yrs now
theather one act play
some volunteer experience but pretty pathetic (maybe about 60 hours total)
lots of world travel
student council since soph yr (reporter, treasurer, this yr i ran for chaplain (im a muslim in a very devout catholic area of the country) and won heheh.

so...should i apply ED or am i safe enough to apply ID/RD? right now rice is pretty much my no.1 pick, but im still looking at others (southwestern for example) with fin aid being a big consideration.

If financial aid is a really big consideration, I wouldn't do ED anywhere.

Your stats seem quite strong - the weak points would probably be your math SAT I score (though you could pull it up by getting a 700+ score on a math SAT II) and possibly clubs/volunteering. It wouldn't hurt to pick up a club or two and/or a volunteer activity on the weekends if you only have 60 hours of service now.

I think ID would be pretty good for you, considering your stats and that you're still looking at other schools. ID is nice in the way that you get two shots (if you get deferred the first time) and that you find out if you've been admitted relatively early without being bound. If in the next month or so, you become totally obsessed with Rice/won't consider any other school/think you could deal with whatever financial aid/merit package (or lack thereof) Rice might give you, do ED.

thanks...im gonna retake the sat I, cuz i havent taken the new one yet...hopefully i can get my scores up

You might want to take the ACT instead of retaking the SAT...I found that math section a lot easier.

I wouldn't worry terribly much about low math scores when you're high on everything else. I got in ID with a 670 math on the SAT I and an even lower score on the math IIc of the SAT II. My ACT math score was much better - a 32.

could anybody else tell me my chances of getting in?

i forgot to mention that im very involved with the school newspaper and im the editor of the entertainment section. also im getting a really good letter of recommendation from a philosophy professor who got his degree from yale. he was teaching a summer course at the local university that i took when i was a soph

^^I like you because of your handle, and I'm also a deadhead. What's your favorite song?

another deadhead out there! awesome. i dont know about my favorite song (i like alot of them..too numerous to mention) but my favorite album is definitely workingman's dead

^I'm more of an american beauty kind of guy. but, off workingman's dead I still like uncle john's band, and I love dire wolf and cumberland blues. Then of course I like aoxomoxoa because St. Stephen and China Cat sunflower are a fav, plus underrated best dead acoustic song is mountains of the moon.

right on...american beauty is one of those albums that everyone, regardless of their musical tastes, has to have. aoxomoxoa...a classic, it goes without saying. of course the experience is enhanced with a little help from the cannabis plant..lol
have you heard any of jerry garcia's collaborations with david grisman? the pizza tapes is incredible

nah, but I go to a lot of Ratdog shows, which is Bob Weir's band, they're awesome, and they play a ton of dead covers. I agree, aoxomoxoa is definetly the type of album that requires interpretive drugs, although I prefer many other chemcials to reef haha.

thats awesome...i almost got a chance to go see the other ones (are they still around?) in dallas one year...they were part of an annual fourth of july picnic that willie nelson puts on..bob dylan was there too..but alas i live in the middle of nowhere so i couldnt make it.

i hv never tried the chemical experience but im sure it does the trick heheh
