ED Question. Please help!!

I will be applying to the early decision to the double degree program (arts and sciences and music). Will Northwestern be so cruel to accept you to one school and the reject you to the other? And since its a binding agreement, I will HAVE to go to the school I was accepted to and not the school I was rejected to? Or, do they just either accept you to both schools or reject to both? thanks

Yikes. Adding ED into the equation makes this a pretty loaded question.

I'd ask the admissions office about this one.

If you're academically qualified but not musically, they will accept you in one and reject you in the other. And in that case, you'll have to go to that one school. If you're not academically qualified and you don't blow them away at the audition, I think you'll probably get rejected from both. The admissions officer said that getting into one school and not the other school or getting rejected from both are common.

aww....Im not acedemically qualified. =( 1800 SAT score, 91.5 average. But I think my violin is good. So is there a chance that I will get accepted to the music school and rejected to arts and sciences? Then I have to go to Northwestern as a music major? that really stinks.

You could probably transfer once here.

yeah...I dont want to do that though...I dont want drop music for some other major. But I also dont only want to major in music. I actually rather get rejected to both rather than accepted to one or the other. *sigh...

Maybe you should apply RD. Think of it as applying to two schools separately.

If I apply, RD I definitely wont get into arts and sciences because my grades are wayy too low. haha

By the way, it turns out that Northwestern discourages people from applying ED to the School of Music, especially the dual-degree program.

really? why?

It's probably because they want to see (or hear) all the applicants before making the decisions, and the dual-degree program + ED combo creates an iffy situation (like your original questions).

Have you spoken to the School of Music to schedule an audition and stuff? They told me I have to ask for a permission if I wanted to apply early because they don't encourage that. I think it largely depends on your major though:

"Students applying to the School of Music are generally better advised to apply under Regular Decision. Some majors we discourage early decision, and some majors we do not allow early decision."

yes. I spoken to them. They told me that if I apply to the dual program and get admitted to one but not the other, then it is no longer a binding decision. Which instrument do you play? They never told me that they dont encourage early decision for music. I have to ask for permission to apply early?....That didnt happen to me....the admissions officer just asked me which dates I would perfer to have my audition and the she said that she'll get back to me as soon as possible.

I heard this from two admissions officers before I said anything about my instrument or stats or whatever, so I believe it's a general fact: whether they encourage/discourage you depends on the major. However, if an admissions officer told you you can apply early decision with whatever instrument you play, then your major is probably one of the majors that are fine to apply under early decision.
