ED question

Hi, I just got accepted Early Decision. I know I am supposed to reject/cancel all applications that are still in progress/already decided, but my question is by when do I need to do that. Can I take my time with this or do I need to do this IMMEDIATELY?

I might just want to hear their decisions and then deny it, lol.

This question recently came up on CC. You also can check CC's archives for it.
You need to withdraw your other applications right away. No reason to waste other college admissions officers' time when you've committed to go elsewhere. Also, by not withdrawing your application, you may be taking a space from someone at your own school who really wants to go there.

I understand, but is there a deadline for these withdrawals...like you must withdraw all applications within a week or else you can't get in anymore?

well said, northstarmom. that's exactly what you should do.

no deadline- just do it as soon as possible, within the next few days.

It's called courtesy -- to the schools you applied to, to the counselor staff at your HS (who are busy compiling transcripts, recs for you), to your high school's reputation at these schools (Oh, that's the school with the snooty kids who won't communicate w/us despite ED somewhere else) and future applicants from your school. You also move one kid off of a potential wait list to an admit. Give him/her all the choices he/she needs in March. You're finished -- many of your fellow HS seniors are still sweating.

Congrats for your ED acceptance -- it's quite an achievement -- but avoid the temptation to stroke your ego just to see if others will accept you. You're almost an adult. Be mature about this.

If you are waiting for financial aid info, you can wait until you get that (which should be within a week). If you are not waiting, you should still withdraw within a week. No one expects you to rush to the post office within 24 hours...but 72 hours or so is expected.
