If this has been asked before sorry I didn't see the thread but if you apply ED somewhere and they don't give you enough financial aid can you back out? Thanks.

Yes, you can. However, it’s not easy and you’ll have to prove the aid isn’t sufficient, etc. Try reading [this article](http://www.campuscompare.com/college-resources/financial_aid/tag/early-decision/) or check out this thread:

If you think you’re going to need a good deal of aid, but are not sure you’ll receive it, early decision may not be for you.

Thanks for all the great info.

“it’s not easy and you’ll have to prove the aid isn’t sufficient”

It is easy, and you don’t have to prove anything; it is your decision if the offered aid is sufficient or not. The link clearly explains this, as does the common app.

If you find the offered aid is insufficient, you can decline the ED offer without consequence and apply RD to other schools.

ED can be used when you have that one dream school above all others that you will attend if there is any way possible. ED should not be used if you want to compare FA packages.

True, you can back out of your ED school if your financial aid award isn’t sufficient; I’m not denying that. However, at least based on what other senior members of this forum have posted, it isn’t an easy process (of course, this could vary from school to school, or situation to situation, making a definitive answer difficult).

Yes, but it’s all rumor, contrary to publicized instructions and denials by schools when explicitly asked.

At schools or consortiums that make uniform FA offers, there’s no point in applying to the others; if you can’t afford one, you can’t afford the others.
