bump 10char

you have a great shot at the other schools that you are applying to. i think with your grades/SATs you could even reach higher

anybody? if not these schools where should i reach higher

UNC-CH and UVA will probably be reaches. Both only accept @20-25% OOS, and for UNC it is closer to 15% and NJ is very competitive for both. Better shot at BC.

I would try for UMD CP, Smith Business School or Honors, Gemstone or Scholars.

We have just recently moved from NC and DS is in UMD class of 12, he was recruited by UNC CH, but did not want to go there. The kids that we know that were accepted IS had much higher GPA’s, same SAT and same amt of ECS. Again, they competed against a higher acceptance rate since they were IS. All of them were Valedictorians or Salutorians, UNC CH is equivalent to Duke it has an acceptance rate of 34%, out of that 34% only 16% are from OOS. Do the math, basically it is a 5% chance from OOS.

We now live in VA and every kid that is eligible for IVY applies to UVA. UVA only ranks behind Berkely as the number 2 in the Nation for Public Universities, and UNC CH is number 5. Penn State is 15 and Alabama is 37.

Don’t mean to be a downer, but that is the reality.

I think you have a shot for UMD CP, which is ranked 18 in the nation and VA Tech which is number 30

UNC- high match/low reach(you have a good shot)
UVM-high match/low reach
BC-Match(I think you look good here)

Here is from the UNC CH site

If you look at it you are in the realm, but the major problem is you are from OOS. So that means you have to e in the top of everything…your W GPA is lower than the avg and although you are in the top 10% of your class, 43 % of freshman are numbered 1-10, which means you want to be one of them when they only take 20% from OOS

Since UVA is ranked higher, I would assume that you need to be even higher to get in.

BC has an acceptance rate of 29% so I would say in for them

alright thanks. pretty indepth analysis. any suggestions of private schools to apply to? i mean i have heard vandy and duke but in terms of business what do they offer? i want some other reaches as well any input would be appreciated

Well Duke is a great college, but it is on par if not higher than UNC CH. Vandy is like Duke and not known for Business. That being said any degree from either university is prestigious and opens doors.

NYU has a great business school
Notre Dame is another great option.
Check the link below from Newsweek that ranks schools worldwide and maybe something will hit you. Just realize you might have already missed some cut off dates

[Top 100 Global Universities - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_100_Global_Universities)

My son has nearly identical stats (your test scores are higher) and just got into Vandy (his dream school) ED. He also applied and saw UNC, Uva, BC, UMCP, Georgetown, etc. Honestly, they are all good schools so you can’t go wrong. He also applied to U Mich, but we didn’t see it. I’m not familiar with business at Vandy (if it even offers much of it) but the larger state flagships certainly offer it as does BC. Have you already applied to these other schools? The deadlines are rapidly approaching, so do so now if you haven’t already. Good luck!

yea i applied ea to unc, already into PSU, full ride to Bama, sent out UVA and BC last week. considering Vandy, have to make that decision this weekend! just dont know how i am going to weight cost- free for bama or $45,000 for some of the others. Any thoughts on Emory?

I was going to suggest Emory. Great school and b-school is way up there.

S also looked at it but doesn’t have a football team - don’t know how important that is to your college experience expectations. An absolute no-go for my S. One issue with BC is they do not guarantee 4 years of housing for everyone, just some. Also, a certain percentage of the freshman live in Newton, which is about 1.5 miles away from the main campus. Not a huge deal but for the $$ I wanted my son to walk to class, not have to catch a bus! I just imagined it being way too easy to “miss” the bus, especially during the cold Boston winters. Just a thought since you mention cost comparisions.

Emory is a really good school. no d1 sports though so that might be kind of a downer. Wake Forest might be worth a look, maybe notre dame and northwestern as well, obviously as reaches. UNC is a b**ch to get into oos, i went to visit and they said they get more apps oos than is and only like 15% of the clas can be oos. I have a friend that got into northwestern and university of chicago while getting rejected at unc. Uva is a littler easier oos then unc, just because they let a higher % of the class be oos, and it is also better ranked than unc. BC I think u have a pretty good shot at. I also think vandy may be worth a look, maybe another top state school like u mich, possibly g-town as well

Have you thought about UMiami.

DS got a full ride to them compared to only 8K for UMDCP, although accepted into Scholars for UMD and that is why he chose them.

If you have a full ride to Bama I would think UMiami would be just as competitive. and a safety.

I am almost 100% pos. that even if you applied to Smith Business, you would not get fin aid since I believe that had to be completed by Dec. 1.

Here is background about Smith for national rank

As you can see they are the tops for Business. UMDCP also gives you the exact same feeling of a diverse university. The best quality to me about UMD is not only it being ranked nationally and internationally, for many programs, but the campus gives you a true campus feeling, very much like UNC CH, nothing like UPenn. DS also wanted weekend life including the football and basketball games. If accepted to Smith, Honors, Gemstone, or Scholars all of these programs are limited in numbers, the dorms and classes are segregated for these programs (Honors, Gemstone and Scholars) thus you get a large univ. feeling, but you also get that small college feel. Of course I am prejudice to the school b/c DS goes there for Scholars and loves it!

BTW I think Emory is a great school, but you need to look at yourself, as others have said they don’t have the football/bball like PSU, BAMA, UVA, UNC. The college will have a much different feel, since it is much smaller. Sometimes the campus does matter and the lifesyle they offer. Don’t go to a school only b/c of the program, go b/c the program and the school feels right…trust me I went only for a program and it was a miserable 4 yrs.

Good Luck

i also just thought about UMich…but that is extremely competitive

UNC’s OOS SAT Range is something like 1350-1480 for CR + M. That’s what the admissions counselor told me when he visited our school. Looks good for you…

honestly, no interest in UMich. Too cold!!! but now that its been mentioned im taking a look at UMiami, scholarships seem pretty good. yea, Emory is out. I need the big school vibe, school spirit, sports, good party scene. i think i am going to give vandy a shot, UM too, figure it out in april when i can weigh the pros and cons with the cost. thanks for all the input

If you need the big school vibe also look at Clemson, GA Tech, U of FL,

Again I think if these colleges are in line with UMD, you would have had at least part 1 done before Dec 1st to be qualified for FA from the school.

Good luck

Yes, at U Maryland you have to apply by Dec. 1 for best consideration for all the different honors programs. I believe U of FL starts accepting apps very early (sept?) so they fill up early. Also, they take alot of IS kids. No doubt you will get into Clemson and you may want to research their policy on in-state tuition for qualified OOS students. Personally, I think U MD (Smith) is a much better option than Clemson. Of course, Vandy is an incredible place!
