Got like 30 mins of sleep night before, too much anxiety maybe? I'm going to retake September and I think I can get a solid 34 by then.
* LOL. Idek about this one. Had a terrible precal teacher so a lot of stuff was new to me. Retaking in October.

Took Comp Sci courses at CC over the summer

EC's:

50+ Volunteer hours at local store
100+ hours at various clubs at school
Varsity Badminton 2 years
Web Designer(CTO too?) at a nonprofit me and my friends are going to create. We teach comp sci and tutor other subjects as well.
I run a website that gets over 1000 views a day

Work experience(?)

I create websites and make money off of them. I usually do this over the summer. Over the past 2 summers I've made around 2000 dollars and have put it towards summer school tuition and other things my family can't afford.

As you can tell, I'm pretty weak as an applicant. I'm hoping that ED and an Interview will up my chances of getting accepted. My EC's are pretty bad, but they focus a lot around web design and programming etc. I use a lot of technology and I tend to use programming knowledge in a lot of my website so it really shows my passion for CS.

Rice is really unpredictable, I’ve more and less qualified students get accepted and rejected. I’d probably try and diversify your resume a bit, show that comp sci isn’t the only thing thats important to you. Show that you had to overcome something (like working yourself to afford summer school tuition), that could be your selling point. Make sure to email your regional counsellor to express your interest, I know that Rice really wants to be an applicants first choice, not just a slightly lower standard “Southern Ivy.” They ask you to list the other schools you applied to so be aware of this. Overall, your application is decent. You have a fair shot, just not a great one. Best of wishes! Go Owls!

@textocali
Honestly, hearing “fair shot” is quite relieving. I don’t expect a great shot because I’ve have only recently begun caring a great deal about college and getting into a great school. If there was a way to have a great shot at Rice, what areas would I need to improve? Is it academics? It’s probably academics huh. Regarding the interest, I’ve actually been thinking about e-mailing the counselor but haven’t been able to get a name. You don’t happen to know where I could find that info, do you? Regardless, thanks so much for the help and for the reinforcement!

You have a reasonable chance, for a reach, that is. ACT 25%-75% is 31-35, a wide range indicates it admits a variety of scores. Retake the ACT and see if you can do a little better so you can be safer in that department. Rice admitted 20% of its applicants to ED last year. You are certainly competitive, but Rice has to deny a lot of intelligent students as well. Your GPA is great. Although you have taken 2 APs already, have you taken many honors classes in the rest? Course rigor is probably one of the most important factors. On Rice’s common data set, they have work experience as “considered”. It could help you a little, but probably won’t be a big factor.

Demonstrate interest if you can!

Good luck, I am also considering applying to Rice.

@Ctesiphon
Thanks! I appreciate the response. I’ve taken notice of the ACT score range and mines is really at the lower end. Hopefully, come September, I’ll have a more competitive score. Glad to see that you’ve taken interest in Rice! Hopefully we can both get accepted when the time comes!

ALSO,
Oops, maybe i should have mentioned that i’m asian (viet more specifically) LOL… that is actually a very important detail.

@Lacoste
Yeah, unfortunately. I’m going to retake in September and hopefully i’ll hit around 34 by then just to be in the safe zone. I’m not too far away. Thanks!

I’ll try my best to chance you, but I’m not too good with chancing. Thanks a lot!

NOTICE:
I e-mailed Rice’s Admissions Office and they do NOT have Rice Regional counselors. If you e-mail their admi@rice.edu, you can ask all your questions there!

Reach right now, if you score a 34 on the ACT, then I believe its a low reach/very high match. Definitely apply! Your web design work is pretty attractive, consider bringing that up in your essays. In addition, remember that ED does not improve your chances drastically

Thanks for the chance and that’s really good to hear. I’m hoping for it to be around a high match and low reach, but as many have told me, schools like Rice are highly unpredictable. I understand that it doesn’t improve my chances dramatically, but Rice is my first choice and i’ll take all the help I can get.

Thanks! I chanced you back. I personally find the ACT easier than the SAT. Something about that CR section just doesn’t do it for me. Would you suggest I solidify both my SAT and ACT scores? I was going to take Math 2 in October and ACT in September, so when ED deadline rolls around, I’ll have my scores ready to go. My school does offer more, but its a bit late… I’m a rising senior LOL. Geez, I probably should have checked this more, I’m missing so much from my stats.

Just re-read through my posts and saw that you edited your post as well. Unfortunately, my school does not offer any honors courses. The only classes that go into our weighted GPA are APs . We do have “accelerated” classes English 1A/2A (both of which I have taken) that are thought of as honors, but do not actually have any merit other than being slightly faster than regular english classes. However, I still should have taken as much APs as possible, but I was worried that the workload would have been too much. Oh well, as a rising senior, it’s a bit too late now.

I’ll definitely find a way to demonstrate interest, just not sure how yet! Does anyone have any idea? Is it normal just to go up and say “Hey I like your school” or is it done more subtly by asking various questions etc.

I find that just saying you’re interested doesn’t leave any room to continue a discussion, I suppose I’ll just find some questions to ask.

Universities, especially selective ones like RIce, understand how your high school works. They know all the little logistics and whatnot, what’s available, etc. I understand where you’re coming from though - except for me, I didn’t take any honors Freshman year and one class Sophomore year, when I could have challenged myself much more. But, if those options simply weren’t available to you they will understand and it won’t affect your admissions.

Demonstrate interest means doing things like Campus visits, Attending off-campus events (check their website for these), interviews, e-mailing professors of your intended major questions about this or that.

Whoa, a bunch of solid tips all around in this thread. Thanks for the heads up. Anyone who sees this and is interested in demonstrating interest, I suggest you take a look at this thread. I’m definitely going to e-mail the CS professor and see if I can get to know him or her better.

Bummer, if my school had honors , it would have made my rigor look a lot better. Glad that it won’t affect my admissions though!
