DO I understand that Dartmouth is looking for particularly kids with outdoor/nature ECs and activities since their campus provides ample opportunities for that? I don't have much outdoor ECs.

I'm not sure. I know that they tend to draw more outdoorsy kids. Like their frosh orientation is like summer camp. I wrote my short answer about an EC on my only outdoorsy one, but that was because I had a lot to write about. I'm not saying that it was the clincher; I doubt that they would reject someone just because they aren't a nature-lover. Outdoor ECs probably do suggest that you belong there. Are you willing to go on hikes and what not? If you aren't, you might not fit in. (The girl I know who goes there was from NYC and had never seen a forest save Central Park. After the frosh summer thing, she fell in love with nature. So don't knock it before you try it.)

Right. My "outdoorsy" thing is living in a forest. ;)

Dartmouth tends to attract that type of student applicant pool because its environment offers a lot to that type of student. HOWEVER, I think that the admissions representatives mean it when they state in information sessions that they seek a diverse student body. A strong applicant who will add to the dimensions of that student body will be attractive to them. I think that there are many students who do not necessarily identify themselves as outdoors afficionados. (They may come to better appreciate when they are surrounded by it however.)

I can attest to that, my daughter was definitely not an "outdoors" type person as we laughed at the very thought of her roughing it for 5 days on the DOC trip. She has definitely come to appreciate the outdoors since she has been in Hanover
