ED to Brown

SAT: 1550 (35R, perfect M and W, got 37R on my second test but 37 on W as well so gonna scratch that)

SAT II: Bio:780 going to take Math iI this weekend (prob getting 800)

GPA: 3.79 unweighted, 4.41 weighted

Course Rigor: Basically all honors/APs with a few fun electives of various topics ranging from business organization to history of the U.S. through film and media

APs: 5 on physics 1, 4 on US History (forgot to scantron the last five questions after solving all)

Ethnicity: Korean

Nationality: Korean, but currently a permanent citizen in New Jersey

ECs: mostly church related (passionate about my small church community bc they’re like family to me), president of my school’s gifted&talented program (sounds very cocky, I know, but I’ve been a part of it since middle school), TSA, NJ STEM League (founded a year before my freshman year and I’ve had great success with my school’s growing team, and the league has grown exponentially), no sports and I quit stuff I wasn’t interested in like debate and band, NHS (don’t consider that anything tho)

Awards: 42nd in the state for the New Jersey Science League (Biology), 96th percentile gold medal winner in the National Spanish Exam

Work experience: tutoring/teaching jobs, private tutoring from 3rd grade to 1-th grade SATs, all off the books (can I still write about that in my app?)

Next year I’ll be taking all APs and Honors but I’m classes that I think I’ll enjoy. I’m taking AP Lit, AP Bio, AP Calc BC, Enginerring Design Honkrs, Gym, and Lunch

Advantages: I like my personality I think I’m a pretty cool kid that can write some mean essays

Hobbies: I like to lift weights but I’m still pretty small, I’ve gained 30+ pounds of muscle in the last year and 2 months, and I like to research things ranging from historical events, scientific breakthroughs in gene therapy to the science behind muscle hypertrophy aka the smart way to work out, I also enjoy eating good food in excessive amounts (fuel for the iron I pump on a regular basis)

I’m sorry if any of this is formatted badly or if I sound douchey because I wrote this on my phone at 3 A.M. and I have to tutor all day tomorrow so it’s a bit rushed.

Also, I’m wondering. If I should show my weird personality in an ambitious response to the Brown essay about where ivermectin lived by writing about how I used to eat ants as a kid in Korea, moved to China for half a year where I sampled their ants, and settled in the U.S. where people say everything’s bigger but the ants certainly are not. Would this essay improve my odds of admission? Anyway, please let me know what my odds of being admitted ED is going to be. I really like brown as an institution and the freedom and support it can offer me.

*also something to note is that my school just sent a pair of unidentifiable twins who were the valedictorian and salutatorian, the valedictorian got accepted ED and his sister got in RD after getting waitlisted. My school has a pretty good rep with ivies but it might be because many athletes and legacy kids get in. I’m definitely not as academically qualified as the two, and I think they have some sort of legacy connection? I’m wondering what my odds are.

“all off the books (can I still write about that in my app?)”

Most colleges aren’t going to cross reference a job on your EC to your tax returns if that’s what you’re asking. If a college is need aware, though, if someone is looking at your EC list which shows a paid job and your FAFSA info shows you’re listing $0 income that might be an issue.

Just as a practical matter for the future - file a tax return and report the income. Not only is it the honest thing to do, but it would only take a few minutes to file on a super short Form 1040 EZ. You are most likely making so little money that you won’t even owe any taxes, so it’s not going to cost you anything either. If you want to do the right thing, you can still file one; you’ll have a penalty to pay for late filing, but you’ll be in compliance at least.

This last bit is highly, highly unlikely but your phrasing of currently being a “permanent citizen” implies you are not a US citizen by birth but instead went through the immigration process. In case you haven’t been reading the news, our current administration is implementing zero tolerance type policies for immigration and actively deporting citizens who have been found to have been untruthful on their immigration applications by not listing crimes they committed, no matter how minor or long ago. It would be horrible if you were found to not have been filing required tax returns and have your immigration status questioned or revoked. So please, please don’t be so casual about breaking the law because as an immigrant it could have disproportionate consequences for you. My husband is also an immigrant and it’s been shocking for me to see how legal immigrants have recently been deported for relatively minor infractions that were committed years ago.

What do you estimate your class rank to be?
