Just curious, how many people applied ED to Tulane Class of 2023 that were accepted and received Merit Based Scholarships? If you did, what were your ACT/SAT scores and unweighted GPA? Thinking of applying to Tulane ED Class of 2024 (sending out application this weekend…ugh) but hoping for a merit based scholarship. 33 ACT, 3.68 unweighted GPA, 120 community service hours, currently taking 6 AP’s senior year. Afraid if I don’t apply ED then Tulane will think I’m using it as a safety and end up with a deferral. It’s my first choice and would definitely go but hoping for some sort of scholarship. Do I need to apply ED or is EA fine. I keep getting mixed opinions from teachers and advisors. HELP:)
I would suggest talking to your Tulane admissions rep on the phone and see what they say. In addition to getting good current information, your call will be a demonstration of your high interest in Tulane.
Without that kind of inside dope, it is hard to advise you. In the olden days, Tulane ran only on EA and dangled merit awards in order to get certain admitted kids (who seemed highly interested) to enroll.
Applying ED is the best way to show high interest – if you accept me I will enroll. But if enrollment is basically assured with an ED application, what’s Tulane’s incentive to throw money at you to enroll?
I would look at last year’s thread. There weren’t a lot of impressive merit packages being posted for some pretty high stats. Personally, I’d show Tulane a lot of love (which is not hard to do and can be done without a visit) and apply EA. My son got 22k last year with a 1470 and a 3.8 GPA. He did not visit but showed them a ton of interest. He applied EA.
With Tulane’s current applicants those are average stats, not likely to be a yield protection concern. EA is fine and likely the better merit play. As everyone else has suggested help yourself with a good dose of demonstrated interest and spend some time and true effort on your “Why Tulane” essay. You seem service-oriented, so dig into Tulane’s service emphasis to perhaps spark some ideas for you.
Unless you can afford to pay most of your tuition, I would apply EA. My son applied EA and he received a merit scholarship and another scholarship in Jan from Tulane. He had an ACT score of 29 and an unweighted GPA of 3.8 with many AP/DE college courses and over 125 hrs of community service hours. He is a happy Tulane freshmen now. Do the optional essay and optional alumni interview.
