can you do both? or is it just one or the other?

Early Decision - Apply early, have a better chance at being admitted (depends on college, and if accepted, MUST attend.

Early Action - Apply early, recieve decision early. Not sure if it helps chances or not.

No, you can't do both.

Colleges have different rules. Some (like Harvard, Yale, Stanford) have only early action and if you apply EA to one of them, you cannot apply ED or EA to any other college. As to ED, you can apply to only one college ED but majority who have ED allow you to apply EA elsewhere. Some that have EA allow you to apply ED and EA elsewhere and then some with EA allow you to apply only EA elsewhere. So check with each college to which you intend to apply.

thanks for clarifying!

Sometimes, you can apply ED to one school and EA to a whole bunch of others, but watch out. Princeton, for example, does ED but doesn't allow you to apply others schools EA. Why, I don't know...

what other schools are like that?

You'll actually have to go onto each individual school's website to find more information on it. However, commonapp.org is a great website that would be able to give you all of the application possibilities and dates.

it depends on the school

if it's single-choice ea, then no, you can't do both

but i was able to apply ed to oberlin and ea to beloit & uvm this year because beloit & uvm had no restrictions, and oberlin's only restrictions were based on acceptance (submit deposit, withdraw all pending applications, and don't apply to anymore schools)
