I hail from the far away hinterlands of Canada. So that is why I’m not really familiar with this whole RD ED thing. I thought Brown was need blind or whatever, so what if I still need the money but I really want to go to Brown, can I still apply ED? People talk here all the time of not applying early because they need money, so is it true that you get less money or no money if you are ED?

There is no evidence of that.

No. As an international student, they are not need blind. Hence, if you apply with financial aid, it’s harder to get in. Also, if you apply and get in, but don’t get enough money, you could drop your acceptance with no penalty. If you still need money, apply for a large amount of outside scholarships and apply for loans. I agree with silverturtle that there is no evidence that you get more or less money. Actually, Brown randomly increased my financial aid package by a few thousand dollars after the RD round.

You will get the same amount of financial aid from Brown if you are accepted ED or RD.

The main reason people recommend that someone who needs financial aid should not apply ED is because you lose the ability to compare financial aid packages from a variety of schools in April. There are reports of financial aid packages from different schools varying by as much as $20,000/year, and different schools package the aid differently – one school might give you more grants, another more loans.

To add to that, if you wait to do RD, you can often get more money by comparing with other schools. For example, Columbia gave me more money than Brown, so I appealed Brown’s decision and sent them Columbia’s statement. They matched Columbia, and ended up giving me a lot more money. Just a thought. :)
