Anyone else applied ED1 to Smith???

And to the wonderfully helpful parents on this forum: Does anyone know whether Smith will send us anything to confirm that they have received our complete application package?

I don't know about ED, Blur. My daughter received a letter acknowledging her RD application and containing a PIN to Banner so she could see her decision online.

Check out last year's threads.

Hi!

Yep, I applied Early Decision too. I did not recieve any confirmation either, but following MWFN's advice, I checked last year's threads and I don't think you should be too worried about the confirmation. It should arrive in time. To double check, perhaps you should write them an email to confirm, which is what I did.

Best of luck with the application.

I can't wait till Dec!

Hello..any idea what is a loan promissory note?.An outstanding financial aid requirement appeared on my Bannerweb account today. Is it anything that I should have submitted?

In it simplest terms, a promissory note is a written promise to repay a loan or debt under specific terms - usually at a stated time, through a specified series of payments, or upon demand. A promissory note will identify the parties, the amount of the obligation, some form of recitation of the consideration for the obligation (that is, what the debtor received in return for signing the note) and will usually include the terms of repayment, the interest rate which will apply (if any). It may also include an "acceleration clause" which will make the entire amount of the note due if a payment is missed.

In short, check your paperwork because you probably forgot to send in financial aid papers or FAFSA forms. Or, just call admissions and they'll tell you. GL.

I know this is a stupid question. What is the office hour at Smith? I am not really familiar with the working hours in US.

Blur, a dear friend ;) informed me that a promissory note would only be expected after acceptance. Thus, the "promise". Anyway, Call Smith and find out: phone number is (413) 585-2530 and fax number is (413) 585-2566.

Thanks BJM8. I can't wait for ED decisions to be out.

You probably won't have too much longer to wait, I got mine on December 15th, 2005, I remember because it was the last day of school before winter vacation. Good luck!

Hi SmithieandProud..will we be able to access the decision online..the Smith admission officer told me that decisions will be mailed on 12 Dec 2006. The mail will probably take a painfully long time to reach my place(Malaysia)..

The nominal office hours in the U.S. are something like 9-5 (hence the expression "9 to 5" for a regular working gig) or 8-5. I'm on the West Coast so it's always late morning at the earliest when I call Smith. I think in general their office are open until 5pm Massachusetts time, though some offices may close at 4:30 or even 4:00pm.

When I've had to call Smith, the experience has ranged from "helpful" to "extraordinarily helpful." I have some considerable experience with bureaucracies, including of the academic variant...this is extraordinary.
I think I've been misdirected to all of once and that time the person I was misdirected to figure out why I had been sent to him, what the error was, and got me lined up with precisely the right person, giving me the direct number in case I got cut off while being transferred.

Thanks a lot everyone. You all have been "extraordinarily helpful". ;)

Sorry blur, Smith doesn't make admissions decisions available online, nor will they tell you anything over the phone or via email (I tried that :-)). They usually send you a Bannerweb pin and log in name so that you can see if all of your application materials made it okay, but they won't post anything on bannerweb about their final decisions. I know it's a bummer to have to wait, but it's just what they do.

SandP, that's not correct. I found out about my decision online in March 2004 (I'm class of '08).

It might not be true for all admissions decisions, but if decisions will be available online you'll get an email a few days before decisions are available to tell you how to find it.

My daughter received her acceptance online last spring. It may be different for ED, though.

(It was not an email notification but rather one on the web site.)

Well, all I know is that I contacted the Admissions office about getting my decision via email because I live far from Smith and I was worried when my letter didn't show up. The admissions woman told me that they do not send out or reveal decisions via email, so I guess for ED is different from RD.

No, they do not send out email. They make the decisions available online, on Banner.

Again, ED may be different - and, for all I know, last year's online notification may have been the first year they attempted it. I know that Mount Holyoke specifically said that they would not post decisions online, yet decisions appeared there anyway.
