I'm curious to thoughts about schools that have ED1 and ED2. On one hand, ED2 is terrific if the student couldn't get their application finished in time for ED1. It also allows the student to apply to another school ED or SCEA and see how those results net out.

My question is does applying ED2 alert a school that A) that school might not be your first choice and B) the student didn't get their act together to apply ED1.

I know plenty of kids at schools like Vandy and American who have been accepted ED2, but I wonder if the acceptance rate goes down for those who apply ED2.

Acceptance rates do go down for ED2, but not for the reasons you list. Mainly it’s a matter of the hooked applicants (athletes, legacies, developmentals) all applying ED1, which throws off the numbers.

Why would a school look down on an ED2 applicant, you’re telling them you absolutely will go to the school if they pick you. By that logic, everyone who applies RD should be looked down on because they won’t commit at all up front.

ED2 is there probably for exactly the reason you state - students didn’t get in their whacked out #1 pick (HYP) and the school is giving them a second chance, with forgiveness, to declare their undying love. ED2 is not a bad thing.
