ED1, are some rejected?

my son applied ED1 and got his deferral letter the other day. I guess he was pretty bummed out, but is recovering. But now I have a question that perhaps is obvious to others: for those who did not get accepted with ED1, were they ALL deferred to ED2, or were some rejected outright? If some were rejected, that would be sad for those, and I really mean that. But I guess it would be a little silver lining for us, to know that he came close enough to avoid the rejection option.

Still, I thought I saw somewhere that everyone who did not get in was shifted to ED2, so I am confused. Apparently many other schools do a lot of rejecting as part of their ED1 process.

Thanks, in advance, Peter

The other person from my high school to apply early to Wesleyan was rejected, I believe.

I assume some candidates must be rejected from ED1. I was also deferred to ED2, and was then accepted.
