ED1 vs. ED2 thoughts

Hello everybody! I was hoping I could get some insight on a special circumstance in my application process. I have always planned on applying to Vassar early decision. I had a 4.0 in mostly honors/AP freshman and sophomore years, but junior year my grades plummeted due to a depression that I was going through. In addition, I am writing my essay on my struggle last year. My plan was to get back my straight A's during the first quarter and send them to Vassar so they can see that my junior year grades were not who I truly am, but some of my role models are saying maybe I should apply to ED2 so there is more time for them to see grade improvement. So what I'm asking is, do you think 2 months of senior year grades is sufficient for them to see what I truly capable of, or should I wait for ED2?

NOTE What turns me off from appling ED2 is that the admission boost is far less significant. Kids at my school have had great success at Vassar ED, but not ED2 or RD.

My opinion for what it’s worth is that you should do ED1. If you do indeed have straight As again in tough classes, even if it’s just the first quarter, then that should be enough to show that you’ve overcome your struggle of last year. Excellent that you are writing your essay about that…and don’t change your mind about that. I think it is absolutely necessary that you do so. Good luck!

Where can i find the percentage accepted in ED1 compared to ED2? Thx!

@wherezwallace - I’m not sure you can find the percentages you seek. I took a tour with my daughter and they mentioned an acceptance rate for Early Decision as being about 38% as opposed to their then published rate of 22.8% for regular decision, and they said something about Early Decision II being about the same as regular decision. If you really want to go there and the Net Price Calculator tells you that you might be able to afford to do so, then you should go ED I. Good luck.

@stepay, Our D loves Vassar and is applying ED1. 38% is still very low chance but we’ll be doing a lot of praying over the next two months. As for the NPC, it basically told us to “write a check”. We’re blessed so it is what it is.

^^
ED is ~ 47% admitted

Thanks!
