ED2 Class of 2020

omg congrats, Britsmum!!! We are on pins and needles still… our mail comes around 5:30!!! And sometimes it doesn’t come at all if it’s snowing too hard—thank God it’s only rain today! Whatever happened to their motto??? Congrats again : )

Congrats Britsmum!!! We are still waiting for the mail. Keeping fingers crossed. Yikes.

Good luck to your son and everyone waiting for news today!

Anyone else?

So happy to say that my son is in!!! Lacrosse recruited athlete. Feeling very grateful today! Good luck ED2’s!

Congrats to you and your son! Here’s hoping for good news for many more!

Britsmum, what sport does your daughter play?

She is a swimmer. Distance and fly.

Daughter got the skinny letter, Deferred. : (
Anyone know how the RD letters work - all at once, or gradually over the next 6 weeks?

Aww orioles70.

I’m sorry, Orioles70. My son had athletic support through the admissions process so I’m sure that went a long way. A friend of my son’s was deferred last year from Skidmore and ended up getting in in RD. He ended up at Babson, but debated endlessly about which school to choose. I will ask when he received his RD package.

Are there only 3 of us parents here on cc for Skidmore?

It looks like March 24, the decisions were mailed last year and the year before. Most likely all will get notified together. Keep in mind that skidmore knows she was ED and committed to them. That should help her in the regular decision round when being compared to someone who skidmore may not be their top choice. Don’t lose hope!

thanks, the wait will seem like an eternity
she just signed up for an accepted students day at Vermont, which also came through with a nice merit scholarship
she doesn’t seem too troubled be the deferral

My son’s friend said Skidmore’s RD came “at the end of March” so that would probably be March 24th. Congratulations on Vermont! My cousin went there back in the day and loved it.

No, there are lurkers here. My son got in the first round of ED, and is still over the moon.

Good luck to everyone.

Hey,ixnaybob and frutsun, were your kids able to access the class of 2020 Facebook page? My daughter is getting frustrated that they have it approved her request yet.

And there are those of us whose kids are currently at Skidmore  D is a freshman. I’d be happy to answer any questions you might have.

How does your daughter like the dorm situation? I hear they are triples which doesn’t matter to my daughter. What concerns me is my daughter is an athlete and will be getting up at the crack of dawn for practice. I fear her roommates may get annoyed. Do they house athletes together? What is your daughter majoring in? Mine will be a bio major. I’m sure she is happy, but any tips for entering students would be helpful

Hi Britsmum  My daughter started in a triple and had a difficult time adjusting to the lack of space and schedule of her other two roommates but they made it through the first semester without any real issues. For the most part, it was early mornings/late nights that were the issue. D is an early riser, early to bed and found it difficult to sleep through the noise she encountered after 10 pm or so when her roommates were returning to the room. They had an issue with her early mornings, often up by 6:30 am for 8 am classes. I think everyone did their best to be quiet and respectful but it was difficult for everyone. She was offered a single this semester and took it. She remains friends with one of the roommates and they get together to watch some favorite shows weekly. The suite situation is wonderful IMHO. Their window seat was 10’ long and overlooked the dining hall greens, very nice. No issues with bathroom use.

I know nothing about athletics or the housing. I do know that those in the honors program can opt to house together but I’m not sure my D is considering that option for next year, although she was just recently accepted into the program. I know she’d like a roommate with the same lights on/lights off schedule and she is slowly meeting others who might be a good match for next year.

D went in thinking double major: Bio (Molecular/Genetic concentration) and Math with a minor in Latin American Studies. She has since said she might change the bio to a chem w/ biochem concentration, keeping the Math and minor. She had never taken chem and really enjoyed it. Her chem professor asked her to apply to do a research project involving Quantum Physics with him this summer for ten weeks, more due to her strengths in math I think, so this excited her. I think most important is that both first and second semester presented a scheduling conflict and between her advisor and the registrar they were able to get her into the classes she needed to stay on point. IMHO, this was a huge benefit to a small school. She was also offered a tutoring job in the Chem department 10/hours a week which she took in addition to her part time work study job.

I don’t know if I have any tips but I try to answer any specific questions. There are alot of activities going on on campus that D enjoys. She is starting to do downtown a bit more now and I expect as the weather gets warmer, they’ll all go even more. Saratoga is a great college town.

Overall, I really believe Skidmore has been a good choice. My biggest concern was their ability to provide the higher level classes that D needs to reach her double major goal and if the first two semesters are any example, she is going to be fine. Time will tell. The only negative things I have to this point is the required scribner class, required writing/english class, and the fact the school doesn’t allow you to opt out of Bio I and II, which are clearly repeat classes for D. There should be some kind of placement tests for Bio like there is for languages and math.
