I know I'm posting this in the Colgate thread, but.. which college would I have better ED2 chances in? I'm an international applicant, applying for finaid. SAT: 2190 (M: 720, W: 670, CR: 800), SAT II: Physics: 780, Chemistry: 800, Math level 2: 760. My transcript and ECs are okay, and my recs are great.

I had heard somewhere that colgate puts much emphasis on SAT scores of intl students

If I were the admission officer, you are in both of them.

You must know that there's great difference between Colgate and Vassar. Vassar is good at arts, such as literature, history, language, and its econ is pretty good, too. Colgate's strongest departments are econ, international relations, political science. Colgate is also good at science, though some departments like math is really small there, but they're really good. If you want to study hard science, Colgate is better, but you'd better choose Vassar if you want to study arts. Also beware of the fact that Colgate is really in the mid of nowhere, and Vassar used to be a girls' college, even now, about 60% of the students are girls. I know that Colgate's ED2 is rolling, so you can get a fast result. Not so familiar with Vassar's procedure.

Make your own choice. Good luck! Both are great colleges. Hope you'll choose Colgate lol! :P

PS. Where are you? I'm also an intl. I'm from Shanghai, China and got in Colgate through ED1 with nice financial aid. We've got similar stats! :)

I think collegegirlee is right. All the Chinese students I know who got in Colgate have good stats. This is what you're good at!

I'm from India :). And I want to do a double major in computer science and creative writing.. arts AND science. Where does that leave me? Thanks for all the info, though!

The Colgate thread is more helpful, anyway :P. I posted the same thing on the Vassar thread, and I didn't get any responses. :(.

More opinions?

Responding to post #3

That's actually not entirely true. Vassar's largest major is Political Science. Also, in regards to the sciences, Vassar is quite well-established. It has the largest observatory in New York state and a chemistry building (they also grant graduate degrees in Chemistry and no other department.) They also have extensive resources in the biology department (biology is also one of Vassar's biggest majors, next to Poli Sci and English, I believe.) They also have the first degree-granting Cognitive Science program in the country and extremely strong math, physics, and computer science departments (which graduated Grace Hopper, the inventor of the compiler for any programmers out there.)

So honestly, it's not accurate at all to say that Colgate is a better school for the sciences. Although this isn't all-encompassing, Vassar's med school acceptance rate is higher than Colgate's (85% vrs Colgate's self-reported 60-80%.) Also, you were talking about how Colgate focuses more on poli sci. In addition to the aforementioned number of poli-sci majors at Vassar, their law school acceptance rate is higher than Colgate's (88% vrs 85%.)

And yes, Vassar is pretty amazing in the arts. It's unusual to find three theatres on university campus--moreso on a liberal arts college campus. But because Meryl Streep is a more oft recognized name than say Grace Hopper of Ruth Benedict, Vassar's other departments often get overlooked by the general public.

But yeah--both are amazing schools. As ChrisLucifer gave an opinion from a future Colgater (is that right? I made that one up...) I'm biased as a future Vassar student. I tried to be objective, though, with the facts. And as for the male:female ratio, Colgate's more unusual in having a fair balance--most liberal arts colleges have considerably more girls, but I hear it isn't that bad at Vassar. If gender balance is really important to you, than Colgate might be better for you. Also, I've always seen Colgate as a much more sporty school than Vassar.

Thank you very much :). I did read about Grace Hopper and the MA in Chemsitry, so I was wondering about Vassar being an "artsy" school. I think I'll go Vassar. Or maybe I'll just apply RD everywhere.

Btw, I think I met you on the Vassar chat, JasonM, my nick was Kriti.
