EDers: clarify "if accepted, withdraw other apps by jan 2"?

Can anyone clarify "If accepted to Rice under Early Decision, you must commit to Rice and withdraw all other college applications by January 2. . ."?

Do I mail other colleges a letter of resignation?
I was under the assumption that once you're accepted you just make a deposit and sign off the admittance paperwork. Also, if the letter gets lost, will Rice find out that I haven't withdrawn from school XYZ and swing down the rejection hammer?

I fired admi an email but I'm hoping previous EDers know the answer to this.

That means you send in the paperwork to Rice first. Then you call/email all your other schools (RD) and withdraw your application.

If you don’t withdraw and Rice finds out, you will have your admission offer rescinded

Oh okay, thanks. So i guess i should hold sending in other apps until after december 15th to not waste money.

yes. Just wait and see what rice says.
