EDII or RD? You decide ... (sortof)

EDII has a smaller pool of applicants, where space is not an issue, considering they are reviewed earlier than RD applicants. However, at the same time, Financial aid is a huge issue. Theres already a bunch of threads with people endlessly complaining about their financial burdens.

With that said, NYU is my dream school, and there is literally no other college i will go to. Yes, yes, don't limit yourself, there are other better schools, etc. etc. But I know that inevitably, wherever I do get in, I will be attending NYU if I get accepted.

Any thoughts on EDII vs RD for me in particular? You can also chance me if you'd like, it'd only be more helpful.

You’re a definite match as far as CAS goes. Your grades, tests, and the fact that you’re first generation prove it. With your income, I would apply RD to be on the safe side. NYU is notorious for their financial aid and it would be very troublesome if they didn’t give you the aid you need if/when you apply ED.

Side note: I’m Bengali too. Hopefully I’ll see you next year.

I definitely agree. Just, I do not want to take the risk as far as the chances go. I’d much prefer the EDII advantage despite my financial circumstances. I’m still having a ton of troubling balancing out financial risks. I just can’t gauge whether or not to go ahead

I would definitely recommend that you choose regular decision. You’re pretty much a guarantee to get in with your stats and hooks, so why not wait and see what you get for financial aid? It doesn’t make sense for you to do EDII. Thats mainly for people on the border line of getting in or not, and for people where money isn’t a concern. Thats not you.

I just checked out some financial aid packages people usually get early as opposed to regular. And there doesn’t seem to be a correlation where if you apply early you get less financial aid. It seemed that you get maybe a couple thousand more but in the grand scheme of things, it didn’t really matter … people would still complain about the package.

Therefore, I think I should apply EDII considering NYU is my first choice.

idk, I’ll gladly consider other opinions if you guys have them. If you want to chance me, I’d be glad to hear about that as well.

I definitely do not think you should apply to NYU EDII because of the financial constraints - you say you are going to be a pre-med, and that means having to pay for med school as well. Med school is even more expensive than NYU, and getting loans for med school on top of possibly your NYU loans is going to leave you in debt for a very, very long time. But then again, you might get amazing finaid from NYU. But don’t count on it.

I think if you don’t get enough financial aid you are no longer obligated to go.

^ That is true, but it gets very complicated.

I know of a friend who was able to negotiate this financial aid by comparing to other financial aid packages he received from other schools. I don’t know how I will be able to do so though

You’re a match for CAS, I had similar-ish stats and got in ED. My family had an EFC of 0, and I got 25,000 in scholarships and the rest in loans. I couldn’t imagine myself going anywhere else but NYU (but I’m also from Florida and our schools don’t appeal to me down here haha). I know I’ll be in massive debt, but I’m a first generation college kid, and I really wanted NYU. So, I took the plunge and went ED, got in and I accept that I’ll be in some debt. The choice is up to you, but for me, despite the financial constraints, ED was the right option for me. I know a lot of people will call what I did ridiculous, but when you come from a poorer family, you have to accept that debt will, at one time or another, follow you. Maybe what I did was a little stupid, but I’m going to college for a life changing experience and the chance to grow as a person, not for a degree, I could go to a CC for that. It’s all up to you bro!

Apply for EDII. Read the website- the early decision is binding unless there is no way that you feel you can afford it. If that’s your only qualm, that’ll take care of it.

CaptSeven: Read this post and the read of the thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/4424447-post34.html

Honestly, if you are planning on going to med school, I wouldn’t go into massive debt as loan officers can and will refuse you loans if you are too deep in debt. Also - LOANS ARE CONSIDERED FINANCIAL AID.

A very nice article. And I fear that this will be the case for me in a few years. But I still can’t shake this naive feeling of a Dream School. And whenever I talk to my parents (I recommend everyone have one serious financial talk with their parents), my dad always tells me not to worry about financial situations. I feel like this is too common a feeling amongst NYU hopefuls. Right now though, I’m still leaning towards EDII. I’m worrying more and more about my chances

CaptSeven, I have no doubt that you are a very good candidate for NYU - you come from Hunter College HS, and have good SATs and a good UW GPA. And I also know your feeling of the Dream School - that is why I applied to NYU EDI. However, I just feel like this isn’t in your best interests in the long run, especially with med school on the horizon. I would suggest messaging missamericanpie (a NYU student who gives out very good and sensible advice, and a longtime forum member) and telling her your situation and asking for her advice.

Oh yeah and I have to clarify this - the financial aid office is the entity that determines whether or not you can pay for NYU, not you and your family. So if they offer you loans and say “yep, you can afford it” you are not able to back out.

I honestly think you’ll get accepted if you apply RD. I applied ED to my dream school too because I didn’t have the stats that would get me accepted to RD (but if I did, trust me I’d be applying RD). Therefore, I had to think of other plans if I didn’t get the FA package that I wanted (I find out next month but I’m guessing around 30k that was my estimate it gave me). Plus I applied for the NROTC scholarship. If there is NO way you can pay for NYU if you don’t get the FA package that you want (and trust me, you’ll get a great package) then don’t apply EDII. But honestly I think you will get a good FA Package because NYU is very generous and your parents have a low income. But that’s my opinion, if you don’t want to cut it that short, then apply RD.

Bump. Applications due in a few days and I still can’t decide …

Bumpittttttty

Read this thread over again and then ask yourself if going into debt with med school on the horizon is worth it.
