I am currently debating whether or not to apply to CMU under EDII or RD. I am interested in Engineering and will be applying to CIT with possible major of ECE or Materials Science. Is there a significant advantage in applying EDII? I like to have other options open for RD--just in case financials and I like to have other options open. Can someone tell me if what are my chances better at EDII? I have posted some stats below:

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 780 math, 650 reading (eww), 720 writing, Composite: 2150
SAT II: 760Math II, 750 Chemistry
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.85 (4.48 weighted)
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): top 7% (school doesn't rank)
AP (place score in parenthesis): BC Calculus 5, Chemistry 5, European History 4
Senior Year Course Load: AP Bio, AP Stat, Ap English Literature, AP Physics B, Exploring Engineering
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):
Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Boy Scouts (Senior Patrol Leader--basically lead the whole troop of 40 kids, working on Eagle Scout), Piano 10 years of experience, Track, XC (varsity letter 1 year), Environmental Club, Science Team, National Honor Society,
Summer Activities: Volunteered at high school's sustainable garden (garden manager), took a computer programming and interactive graphics class at MIT, took a 100-mile canoe trip with a group of friends in the wilderness in Maine
Essays: pretty good. (8.5-9/10)
Teacher Recommendation: Good.
Counselor Rec: Above average--he is new this year but seems to like me a lot.
Additional Rec: Very very good. Will offer the most insight about me.

State (if domestic applicant):New England
Country (if international applicant): US
School Type: public
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Male

My application is centered around my passion for the environment. I am trying to convey this to CMU. I'm not just a nerd but also enjoy the outdoors and nature.

Your grade and SAT combination put you at about the median for CMU overall but for CIT it is probably in the lower 50%. They have had a significant surge in Chinese students the past few years and while your overall Appln and EC look good to me, your test scores and grades may be a little light.

if you have a strong ED school that would be your first choice ahead of CMU then I would consider that, but if CMU is your first choice you should give it a shot!

CMU is pretty much my top school…but I’m kinda stuck between that and University of Michigan (I already applied EA). Do you think it is worth applying EDII still for CMU?

Given your situation, you should DEFINITELY apply ED. Here’s why:

Carnegie Mellon meets full financial need if you apply ED. If you apply RD however, the financial aid package will be much worse (around 5-10k less in grants and 10-25k less in loans). Many of my friends were unable to afford Carnegie Mellon because they applied RD. Thus, applying RD isn’t smart if you really want good (read bearable) financial aid.

In addition, Carnegie Mellon is your top choice so you clearly won’t regret applying ED II. Despite what andesite says, your profile is very competitive for CIT. Your SAT is not that great, but your math score is good. Given that you’re applying for engineering, the adcoms will focus on your math score and pay less attention to the other sections. Your subject tests will be a detriment however because they aren’t in the 780-800 range.

That said, your class rank is excellent and so are your EC’s. You stand a very good chance of being accepted to CIT ED. If you do apply ED, I’d recommend applying to material science instead of ECE. Material science is more related to your environmental EC’s than ECE. In addition, ECE is much more competitive than material science. Regardless of what admissions officers say, there is a significant different between ECE and non-ECE in their eyes. Also, keep in mind that you can always switch into ECE if you get accepted to CIT.

tl;dr - Everything you’ve written indicates that you should apply ED II to Carnegie Mellon. I strongly suggest applying to Material Science over ECE, but its ultimately your decision. BTW, what aren’t you considering the Civil and Environmental Engineering major?
