^ yeah because St Andrews performed well on student surveys. But I think Edinburgh performs well on a subject to subject evaluation.

Generally speaking St Andrews, but it depends on the subject. If you’re doing medicine or computer science, then go to Edinburgh (also Law, since St Andrews is without a law school). If IR, then no question go with St Andrews. On the whole St Andrews has far higher entry standards, so it will likely be more difficult to gain entry. St Andrews is ranked far higher too, if that matters. On another note, if the prospective student is planning to be based in the US then consider that only four UK universities seem to have solid name recognition/cachet in the US: LSE, Oxford, St Andrews, and Cambridge.

Just to offer some moral support, I am in the same situation as you. I also got accepted into both Edinburgh and St. Andrews for international Relations, and I have no idea which to choose. I am planning to go visit in the spring. I hope that I will just have a gut feeling.
@purplezebra5, this thread is 6.5 years old- the OP and most of the responders will have finished university by now! Visiting both is a really good idea. St Andrews will be ‘easier’ in some ways- they work harder than most UK unis to make the transition easier for Americans, and something like 20+% of the students are American. Edinburgh is more work at the start, but has a lot to offer. Re-read the program descriptions- they matter more than you might think.
I am applying to St. Andrews and Edinburgh as well as some US universities. Anyone have anything to add? I.m thinking Economics major.
