EDing to either JHU or Brown - Will Chance Back

As of now, I'm deciding between applying Early Decision to either Johns Hopkins (not biomed) or Brown. I know that obviously my chances at Brown would be lower, but I feel as if JHU would be wasting a bit of the ED advantage.

Here are my stats.

Academic
GPA: 3.75 unweighted, 4.2 weighted
SAT Reasoning: 2260 (800 W, 740 M, 720 CR)
ACT: Taking in September
SAT IIs: US 760
APs: US, Stat, Lang -> 5, Macro -> 4

Extracurriculars/Leadership
Boys State - Lieutenant Governor (elected by and given speeches in front of 900 kids
- Managing Opinion Editor for Newspaper
- State Party Vice-Chairmen
Model United Nations Club - Vice President
- Best Delegate awards from Princeton, Rutgers; Outstanding Delegate awards WU etc.
Policy Debate Team - Varsity Captain
- 2nd Place in New Jersey CVC 2009 - 2010 season
- 9-time Best Speaker
Mock Trial/Princeton Moot Court
- Best finishing attorney team in school's history
American Taekwando Association Songham 1BD Black Belt, 6th Midterm
Secretary of Recycling Club
Captain of Consumer Bowl Team

Volunteering, Internships
Interned with the Mayor of my town (more like a fellowship he was teaching me a lot)
Interning on the Campaign Trail for a congressional candidate

Awards
Boy's State
National Honor Society
Math Honor Society
Three year participant in Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School Public Affairs Forum

I've been enrolled in a relatively difficult and rigorous schedule, and my weak GPA is mostly attributed to getting Bs in French regular. My essays will hopefully be good, and my recs will also be glowing, with one supplemental one coming from either the Mayor or the Congressmen.

Holistically, I'd say that I have a decent to good shot at JHU if I ED there, with Brown being a reach. I'd love to hear some opinions.

Bump

Yeah, Brown will be tough, but you have some great ECs. I’m assuming you’re going for PoliSci or IR, so you definitely have focus and good leadership roles. I think the main problem will be GPA, but even still, you have as good a shot as anyone. Write good essays that display your passion. I would advise you to go for ED at Brown if that is really your top choice, I think you are a match for JHU if you applied RD.

Its good to see a fellow MUNner on CC. Just out of curiosity, what committee were you in at PMUNC?

Finally, could you chance me back?

Thanks, bump.

Bump, 10char

I don’t know about JHU, but Brown may be reachy. Its not that theres anything particularly wrong with your app, its just that the people applying to ivies have over-the-top apps wwhile you are simply good. You still might make it, though.

Chances are if you were to apply ED to Brown, you would be wasting your ED on a school that is unlikely to accept you in any case. A better strategy would be to use the ED on JHU where it can actually help you.

why Hopkins for poli sci or IR?? definitely not a bad school, but there are better schools that tend to be less competitive…in the end it’s about the experience and what you get from it and not how prestigious the school is

JHU IR is one of the best in the country.

Boys state lt. Guvernor?

I’d be shocked if you didn’t get into either.

Another SAT II?

hmm JHU IR one of the best?? interesting…i musta just looked into the poli sci…my b ahaha

Bump; thanks.

If you have no hook, there is no big advantage of ED at Brown. NJ is a way overrepresented state, without a hook you would need tipy top stats for Brown and GPA and scores both look problematic.

Without a boost in CR and M scores and unless a 3.75 puts you at the top of your class, I’d go for JHU.

I agree with everything that’s been said so far, use your ED on JHU. Your EC’s are pretty solid, but your GPA can be a bit of a problem. Best of luck!

I’d apply early to whatever school you most want to go to. If Brown is your dream school and you apply early to Hopkins and get in, you’ll always wonder if maybe you would have gotten into Brown. If you prefer Hopkins, then by all means apply early…brown and Hopkins were two of my top choices, and though I ultimately decided on another school, I still love them both. Is brown a reach, yeah. But, go ahead and reach.
