Editing Profile and other assorted questions

I know that you can edit the FAFSA but I thought you cannot edit the Profile. However, some of the posts I have been reading seem to indicate that you can edit the Profile. If you cannot, how do you alert the schools to your actual numbers once you do your taxes? Do you need to call them? Also some of the schools list dates that the Profile and FAFSA have to be filed by. Is it better to file early and then submit final numbers or wait until your return is done if you can still meet the deadline? Does your application have to reach the schools by the deadline or just be filed by the deadlline date?

I think I read somewhere that once you submit the Profile, you have to print it out to make changes and then mail to the school FA offices.
If you're adding a school to an already-filed Profile, you're given the chance to make electronic changes at that time, but those updated numbers will only go to the additional school.

I'd file early. Some schools also require submission of copies of tax returns in addition to the Profile, so accept that this corrrespondence and documentation will be a continuing chore through the winter/early spring.

If you're counting on having your W-2 on Feb. 1 and doing taxes and filing Profile by Feb. 15 or so, then good luck, stay healthy and hope for no unexpected events or delays. I think the AMT (alternative minimum tax) changes are delaying the availability of some tax forms. With the cost of college, there could be people applying for aid and yet also dealing with those forms, I would think.

Note: I am not an accountant. Far from it. There are others here much more knowledgeable, and maybe they'll stop by and give some advice.
