EDs + Current Columbians, please read!!

heeeey, so i'm applying RD to Columbia and i have some questions for you guys about SAT vs. ACT scores.

my power SAT score is a 2080,
Math: 700
Writing: 710
Reading: 670
(i know, my reading completely and utterly killed me =[)
however, my ACT is a 33,
and i have a 36 in english, 34 math, 34 reading, 31 science
(from three diff. takings, but i have a total composite score of 33, power score = 34!)

what do you recommend i send in? will my SAT scores hurt me?
because according to average statistics i am on the lower mid 50% of SAT scores, but the high mid 50% of ACT scores.
i have a ton of ECs which really tell a lot about me as a person and show my dedication and interests. for specifics, see link!
i go to an extremely competitive high school with a very hard curriculum (all honors + APs over four years...) and an ~91 GPA. no class rank, school too competitive.
i also have a unique family situation and medical history.
hoping my essay is good, but not the best i have written =\ not a big fan of the topic hah, but it definately tells the reader a lot about me as a person not obvious necessarily from grades, ECs, scores, etc.

ALSO: SUBJECT TESTS!!
Math I: 730
Math II: 710
Literature: 700
**i am only sending two, which ones? should i not send level 2 math? it is a horrid percentile, and will that hurt my chances?

You’re gonna have to send your SAT scores as well because Columbia requires all scores to be sent in, but they will ignore it in lieu of your ACT scores, which are more than high enough for acceptance. Good luck!

you will have to send in your SAT scores regardless of whether or not you send in your ACT scores. this is what it says on their website: “Columbia has always expected applicants to report all required standardized testing for which they have sat and will continue to do so for 2009-2010.”

so when you send in your SAT II scores, your SAT I scores will be sent in as well. unchecking your SAT I score will be a violation against columbia’s policy.

Just send in all your schools! Worry more about your essay and short answers :)

Send all your scores, and they’ll only look at the ACT and top 2 SATII’s. The Math II is fine. I understand your concern that since the test has an insane curve, 710 isn’t as good as it sounds, but I don’t think it will hurt you that much. Your SATII’s as a whole aren’t stellar, but they won’t necessarily doom your chances. The key is to put your heart and soul into the personal statement and supplementary (mini) essays. Pay particular attention to the “interests” section. If there’s one thing Columbia College seems to value, it’s the ability to write in a way that creatively and effectively communicates who you are.

if ure applying to SEAS, i think you should submit math 2 (it may be required actually, but i forgot lol)

one important thing to note is that columbia does NOT superscore ACT.

also try not to get freaked out about test scores…mine weren’t the most amazing. I think my essay, recommendations, and music supplement really helped me out. I know people who got rejected with SAT scores well over 2300 and 35 ACTs…they’re mostly looking for the right “fit” to columbia and it’s hard for anyone who is not an admissions officer to know what that is. just put your heart and soul into the application

okay, thanks guys!
so if i send everything, they really ignore SATs in lieu of ACTs? that’s good!
and @ NWdivisionCHAMPS, you really think my ACTs are high enough to get in!?

^Universitygirl, I am confident. I had a 33 ACT and I got in (well i also had a 2280 sat…), but my friend also got in with a 33 ACT. Once your scores are at their 50th percentiles, they will focus a lot more on how you present yourself/what passions you have/essays/receommendations, etc. (if you’re curious, 33 ACT is above the 50th percentile). You have a good shot.

Also, I would recommend you send in your Math II and Lit. scores. Maybe re-take one if you feel you can do better. Good luck!

@ NWdivisionCHAMPS
were you an ED applicant CC 2014? if so, congrats! what is your intended major? =)
if you don’t mind terribly, could you check out my chances thread, and let me know what you think regarding my ECs, etc.?
how much did you focus on the “interests” section of the app? and how long was your essay? =) thanks a bunchhh!

okay, so i have to send all scores ever taken
do you think my SATs will hurt me? how about if i have had even worse SATs?
and i have to send all ACTs in too?
which Subject Tests should i send? only two? (if so, which?) or all three?
please helppp! =)

UniversityGirl,

Yes I was an ED applicant  to Columbia CC. I am intending to major in economics, perhapsss math/chemistry. I’m pumped!!

I didn’t focus too much on that section. I just genuinely listed whatever was on the top of my head, and removed/added names when they popped into my head later on. Movies included I, Robot, Pursuit of Happyness and books included some basketball biographies I liked and such.

List whatever 2 you feel you think is most important for your SAT II’s. I would probably send your Math2 and Lit scores, as the math1 isn’t respected much by colleges. You will have to send all your subject tests via score report anyway. Good luck!!

My essay was about 460 works. It was decent, nothing outstanding. I’m sure it did not help me get in at all.

@NWdivisionCHAMPS, thanks! well, i’m sure your SATs helped, too! i just cannot master that test! =[ hah
and you’re from Washington? wow, that’s a big move! i live near the city, i’m sure you’ll love it! =)
