Educate me about a Colgate education

S has mentioned that some of his friends are going to apply to Colgate. I know nothing about it. What is its reputation/campus/student life, say, vis a vis Williams? What is the profile of the student who applies here?

Colgate is for people who are wait-listed/rejected at Williams and Dartmouth. It's a similar style to these two, just not with as strong a student body. Colgate is actually more like Dartmouth than it is like Williams from a social and sports scene perspective. It has a strong presence on Wall St, similar to but not quite as good as Dartmouth and Williams as well.

The profile of the student who applies to Colgate has ~ 1400 SAT, top 5% of hs class (but probably not 1500 SAT, top 1%) and probably applied to a few of Dartmouth, Williams, Cornell, Middlebury, Bucknell, who is not looking for an urban environment.

Lots of similarities between Colgate and Willilams (I know I've posted about this before). I'm a Williams grad and my son is a current student at Colgate. Williams is a notch more selective, but many students will have both schools on their college lists. Similarities: rural location, strong academics/small classes, strong athletics, beautiful campuses, very loyal alumni network (Colgate and Williams alumni LOVE their school), active students. Differences: no frats at Williams, more emphasis on the arts at Williams, Colgate is bigger, Colgate has Div I sports. Williams has tutorials and distribution requirements; Colgate has a 4-course core curriculum and distribution requirements. Loyal alumni support is reflected in the extensive construction in progress or just completed on both campuses - just completed library and science center at Colgate, just completed student center and new library in progress at Williams.
