Education Degree - Primary Grades

MU is my daughters first choice she is very excited about her acceptance received last week. We are waiting on the merit based scholarship announcement next month to compare what might be offered against what Dayton has given her.( matches In-State tuition at U of IL )

L wants to earn her degree in Primary Ed and teach 3rd or 4th grade in IL. I know IN has a nice reciprocal agreement with IL regarding their teaching certificates that only require an IL Constitution test and IL History class within a certain amount of time post graduation. Most of their teaching degrees mirror what IL schools offer.

I am not aware of how OH students place after graduation in IL grade schools. The most obvious difference from what I understand is the certificate/degree that Miami offers seems to limit her to Pre-k thru 3 instead of the K thru 8 degree she can earn at other universitiesin IL and IN. I am concerned she won't be considered for placement in buildings that have 1-4th or 1-6th student populations when it comes time to find a job.

Do Miami students ever double major to create that option - can they achieve this in 4 yrs?
Is there anyone out there that is from IL pursuing elementary education? what is your game plan

In addition - it has been suggested that she earn what we call endorsements to help her employment chances down the road in IL schools. One endorsment is call ELL ( English as a Learned Lang) / ESL ( English as a Second Lang) and the other is Reading Recovery / Reading Specialist. These endorsements/certificates are not part of a Special Ed degree and can be additions to her regular Elem Ed degree.

Would any of these be available for her at Miami?

Thanks :)

One of the things that impressed me about MU when we were looking at it for D1 was the comfort level I felt from the professors and department heads for asking questions. You have some specific concerns here. I would call the head of the department, introduce yourself as a mother of a prospective honor student and ask away. I have found the professors very willing to chat about their programs.

One other thing I wanted to mention to you. Have your daughter do an Honors overnight. They do a nice job for the students and parents. They do a scavenger hunt around campus in groups as a way to break the ice, go uptown for pizza/subs, sleep in Tappan with upper classmen to answer questions and attend an Honors class the next day. It sealed the deal for my D. Parents attended presentations by campus security and financial aid directors. Read somewhere that some changes have been made, not sure how it has been changed. I will find out as I will be taking D2 for an overnight.

Thank you – these are awesome ideas. I did not know about the overnight. I will look into it and also contact the Dept Head of Educ.

^Talking about “comfort” - visit “College suits”, very impressive living for upper classmen.
