Education Interruption Explanation

I switched schools after 9th grade, and apparently the Common Application requires an explanation of this. My big essay is basically all about my conflicted feelings about transferring from an inner-city public school to a wealthy private school, and I'm not sure how much to say about this in the explanation. So far, I have something like "After my ninth grade year, I transferred from X High School to Y School. The transfer resulted in a small drop in my grades because of the increased rigor and workload of the Y curriculum. I transferred because, among other reasons, I wanted a smaller community and academic rigor, neither of which I was provided with at X High School." Should I mention the longer essay and/or the issues I raised in that essay (privilege, guilt, etc.)?

I'm not sure whether to mention the drop in grades, either--it was from a 4.5 GPA (which actually will be reported as a 4.0) to 3.6-3.7 (which will probably be recalculated somewhat lower when "fluff" classes are taken out). Do I want to call attention to that?

Thanks so much!

For that question, i just wrote two lines that were like this:

“I moved from school X, where I attended for n years, to school Y because my family moved”

I don’t really think you need to write much for that question. I found it weird that they don’t have the option to write in a textbox instead of a separate attachment…

Thanks! Any idea on whether I should mention the drop in grades?

and did it work out for you alright?

Old thread…
