During the beginning of my sophomore year at college, I took a documented medical leave for anorexia nervosa. Since then I've been in recovery and I'm healthy now. I'd rather not go into specific detail if not necessary, but on the common app I have to provide details as to why I took time off. The other document I have to upload needs to explain in chronological order what I've been doing since I'm not currently enrolled in college. I haven't done many impressive activities during this time. Honestly, I've spent most of my time in hospitals and in therapy. Is it better to be honest while focusing on the positives, or keep my explanation vague and brief? I don't want to be rejected from schools because I'm considered a liability because of the eating disorder. Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

I’ve had really similar circumstances to what you’ve described here. Have you found anything out since posting this?

Sorry to hear that! Unfortunately, I didn’t receive any help from this site on the topic. I made the decision not to go into detail in my application. In the education interruption section, I wrote that I took a documented medical leave of absence. I also mentioned when I was medically cleared to return to school. For the activities since leaving school, I mentioned being hospitalized for months. Then I went into further detail about the little things I’d done since then like volunteering and taking courses at a local art college. I was admitted to my school of choice. Good luck! Hope that helps.

I just saw this when feversandmirrors posted. Great advice from OP.

Transfer324 - sounds like you handled this beautifully and I am glad you were successful at getting into the school you desired. Best of luck to you as you continue to move forward!
