Education major: Miami university or SUNY Geneseo?

I got trasfer offers from SUNY Geneseo & Miami University in Ohio. The major I am applying to is Early childhood education. However,I haven't decided where I go

Tuition: Miami is 27000 per year; Geneseo is 14000

Scholarship: Geneseo gives me 2000 per year. Miami NONE~

Ranking: Miami's teaching major is ranked No.2 in whole America ; Geneseo's teaching is ranked No.1 in NORTH area of America.

Selectivity: Geneseo 35% Miami 80%

I am an inernational student from China.. I really need your suggestions

Thanks a lot~~~~!!!

You need to look at the whole Cost of Attendance (COA) including tuition, fees, housing, meals, books, materials, transportation, and personal expenses. There should be an estimate in your letter describing the financial aid offer. I expect that SUNY Geneseo will be much less expensive for you to attend.

The ranking doesn’t matter much at all for your field of studies. Neither does selectivity. Don’t try to pick the “best” program based on those two things. Pick it based on what it would cost to you. Or, if you really are rich enough to not care about the price, read through the websites for both universities, and base your decision on the courses that you would have to take for your major.

Geneseo gives you the most bang for the buck…it is a great school especially for Education majors. I would go with Geneseo.

rankings aside, there is no question that Miami has a better program than Geneseo and it also has tremendous career/placement resources and alumni interaction/involvement and career assistance. Miami also a better overall university with the significant margin on college life/campus beauty/non-academic activities/opportunities/future alumni involvement/networking margin.

However, if finances are an issue (and they are to our family also), Geneseo would be a good choice.

“…there is no question that Miami has a better program than Geneseo…”

?? is that true? For an education major? I thought Geneseo’s roots was as a state teacher’s college…

I second monydad that Geneseo is pretty famous for being the cradle of (good) teachers. It’s actually one of the best in the SUNY system. Go to Geneseo! A good and inexpensive education. On the other hand, I don’t know much about Miami Univ in Ohio so can’t comment but common sense tells me to stick to a familiar name.

Also, because you are an International Student, I think the brand of State University of New York (or anything involving NY - thanks to Hollywood) will do you better than Miami Univ in Ohio (imagine this scenario. employer: so you are from Miami? No? Erm … so you are from Miami Univ but in Ohio? How could that happen?)

Just my 2 cents
