education major

hi, i was wondering which schools are good for an education major, particularily elementary education. thank you!

You'll want to look at the schools in the state where you plan to teach first, simply because they will provide the cleanest path to licensure.

Also, though not vital for elementary, a lot of universities offer an BA/BS + MEd/MAT in 5 years. Often, the pay bump for the masters is pretty significant so its worth looking into. There are also speciality programs at some universities, for example, Illinois has an MAT/Latin program specifically to train new Latin teachers (there's a huge unmet need - really!)

That said, both the Michigans (UM and MSU) and Wisconsin are perpetual top contenders.

i'm going into elem ed! i'll be attending uva next year. the other schools i applied to were vanderbilt (amazing for ed, 4th or 5th in the country, but uva has always been my top choice), w+m (but only bc i want to teach in virginia) and my local univ millersville (surprisingly, though they recruit for their honors college at a 1200 old sat, they had close to if not a 100% pass rate for praxis 2 tests for every subject). it all depends on what kind of program you want. i applied to schools that required you to double major if not do a BA/MT prog. good luck with your college hunting!

Wow...I find that information about Millersville shocking (it was my local uni as well)! My sister attended Millersville for 2 years and had to tutor her friends taking the Praxis for elem. ed. who failed it the first time due to the math. Maybe that stat is due to you need to pass in order to be admitted to the el ed program after your sophomore year (I believe that's when you take the Praxis in Pa)?

But I do agree with WilliamC...try to go near where you want to teach. Also, try not to spend too much on your undergrad. Teachers are needed pretty much everywhere (some subjects are more easily recruited than others) and certification is a must for good pay!

if you want to save a little money, Kutztown University (a public school in PA) is one of the leading colleges for education. My high school is on the top 100 high school list with majority of the teachers graduating from kutztown. They also have a great elem. ed. program.
