I want to become a high school math teacher so I want to know what the best education schools in New York are. I want to go to school in the city or in an urban area however I know that limits my options so I’m open to more suggestions. Thank you for your help!
In the city or upstate, public or private?
I would prefer to stay in the city but I’m open to suggestions for good upstate schools as well. I’m interested in both public and private schools.
Well, there are the schools with solid education majors like Hunter and SUNY Geneseo. But you’ll need to make sure that the math department is a really good fit for you. Colgate offers prestige in both.
Have you looked at the list of New York State approved colleges/universities to see what your choices are?

You don’t necessarily need to look for education majors. You can major in math then get your masters in math education.
And I wouldn’t worry so much about prestige, either. CUNY schools or SUNY are going to suit you well. There’s no need to go into debt for private schools.
Have you applied yet? I LOVE SUNY New Paltz, SUNY Geneseo, oneonta and cortland all have good ed departments, So do CUNY Brooklyn and Queens college- with free tuition in Fall these are definitley the way to go
You don’t need “the best.” You need the one that’s the best fit for you.
I went to St. Johns a billion years ago. And had ho trouble finding a job, either at graduation or when I re-entered the workforce after kids in 2005.
I agree with the advice about SUNY, though I fear that the new tuition deal, they’re going to become a whole lot more competitive.
My info on this is a little dated, but CCNY had a good and affordable program and was good at placing grads in NYC schools. Definitely check it out.
