If Edwards is incapable of being faithful to his wife, what do you expect as his constituents? Cheaters are vulnerable to bribes, threats, etc… It definitely impacts one’s job performance as a politician.
Well, Edwards got something out of this. He’s not a poof.

Um. Did you really think about this before you posted it? From police officers to politicians it is an issue. You have an affair (gambling debts, drug habit, pick your poison)that you don’t want anyone to know about. The other person get the bright idea to blackmail you. You end up either spilling the beans or doing things you wouldn’t or shouldn’t do to keep them quiet. Wow.

I suppose FDR was not faithful to his country. Neither was JFK. Neither was George HW Bush. This argument doesn’t seem right.

I think it is worse that John Edwards would have run for president with this hidden. Many people in the public are silly and think that fidelity and good governing go together…this would have doomed the Democratic party and many things Edwards stood for. Edwards was narcissistic. Edwards was greedy. But, it is unlikely that this infidelity would have really affected his presidency.

There is no way to really know if JFK’s running around had any impact or not. I can guarantee you he wouldn’t get away with it now days. I do agree that the POTUS may be less susceptible than a congressman or policy making official but if we can week those types out we should.

I don’t know if he would get away with it these days. Clinton certainly did. And my point was that having an affair does not, by itself, make someone incapable of judgment…FDR and JFK had good judgment. Whether their judgment was made better or worse from the affair, or whether it had no impact…we just don’t know. So, statements can’t be made in either direction.

honestly i dont really care about edwards having an affair. it happens all the time.

what bothers me is that the wives always stand by their husband whenever this happens. i think its a disgrace to women. for once i’d like to see the wife have her own press conference about how she’s going to divorce this guy. instead of seeming all weak and dependent.

although i do kind of understand edwards having an affair, not that it was justified. having a wife whos always got cancer is very stressful and draining and i can see how he could look somewhere else to try to find happiness and just a break from it all. people are jumping on him like hes some evil person, but hes just human like the rest of us, and who knows what we’d do in the situation. i dont like how he used campaign money on his mistresses youtube videos though, if he wants to give her money he should give her some of his own millions not donors money.

^ kwu… 8 years of peace and prosperity was too much for you to handle I guess… If Clinton didn’t have the Lewinski scandal he would have gone down in history as a great president.

Instead, you probably like the 8 years of war, increased debt, and robbing of the middle and lower classes. George Bush will definitely go down in history as one of the worst presidents ever.

Men have affairs. Bible thumping men hold it in and dream about having an affair.
This board has some of the biggest elitists I have ever heard of.

SARCASM?! On my internet? flails arms wildly

<3 Bush. Little Bush AND Big Bush.
brb, Leviticus. THUMP

That’s why we can’t trust McCain.

idk personally i think he’s a scumbag. his wife had cancer and i dont get how anyone could do that. but i dont know… i’ve just never really respected cheaters.
but i guess it’s not as bad as ex governor spitzer.

ummmm Edwards is a politician. So what he did plays into the role of a politician LOL.
Politicians are lying, dirty scum bags. lol.

Last time I checked Clinton was caught so he certainly did not get away with it.

There hasn’t been enough time elapse to judge Clinton’s presidency. The will happen 30-50 years from now. The same with Bush. We are just getting to the point where Reagan is truly being appreciated.

Bush will never be Reagan. He will go down as the next Warren G. Harding: a bumbling fool whose amusing ignorance resulted in frightening catastrophic consequences.

I never compared Bush and Reagan. Do you ever have anything positive to say?

By getting away with it, I meant getting reelected. The topic at hand was whether the public would accept a candidate who had had an affair. As for the Clinton legacy–as a president, he was appreciated by many; even today, his popularity is greater than that of George W Bush, George HW Bush, Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford, Richard Nixon. I think that is a pretty good legacy.

And Reagan has been appreciated since George HW Bush’s administration. He’s not just getting appreciated.

iirc Clinton got re-elected BEFORE the scandal broke.

correct, silly mistake on my part

About Bush? Never. And I think most people would agree.

Here’s something “positive”: Bush only has five more months in office.

But his economic policies will last till Sept 30th 2009.
