So I'm currently admitted to Physics at A&M and Electrical Engineering at UT, but would prefer to be at A&M in an engineering degree. I would simply take physics for a year at A&M and request a change of major, as many of the courses between physics and engineering majors are similar the first year and easily transferable. However I am currently dependent on my grandparents for financial assistance, and one of their stipulations is that I be in an engineering major (they feel that I will be far more likely to make loan payments if I am, and there isn't a chance of changing their mind).

I would feel far more comfortable in Chemical Engineering (EE was my second choice at UT) and ideally I would transfer into Chem E at A&M as soon as possible.

I did a bit of research and last year 12 of approx. 45 applicants were allowed to transfer into chemical engineering (everyone with greater than a 3.40 GPA was accepted).

I'm a fairly good student with steadily improving grades/work ethic over the course of high school. HS GPA 3.66 (weighted), SAT: R710 M770 W730
But I'm still not entirely confident that I will be able to make it into Chem E or another engineering major at A&M and most if not all engineering majors will not accept changes of major until after an applicant has completed a full year.

Would it possibly be better to play it safe at UT even though it is not my major or college of choice?

Have you asked about changing your major at TAMU now? My d was admitted a couple of years ago and wanted to do the reverse of what you are doing. She asked and was told all she had to do was submit a change before a certain date. Of course, I think it might be easier to make that switch than the one you are considering as less students want to major in Physics. She decided not to go to A&M in the end and so did not do that, however.

You might also post your question on the Texas A&M forum if you haven’t already: [Texas A&M University - College Confidential](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/texas-m-university/)

From what I’ve read on the A&M website it’s much easier to do the reverse of what I’m doing, simply because Engineering is generally full and other majors like physics always have space available. So instead of filling out a form and getting it changed now they have me wait until after the first semester to apply for a change (changes are then accepted after the first year)

I’ll give it a try posting there, maybe there’s someone else at A&M I can talk to as I’ve already been to the Chem E department.

Thanks NeedAVacation.

UT Austin is an excellent school for engineering, so you should not have any academic regrets about going there.

I know it’s an excellent school and in many cases has better programs than A&M. A&M’s just my preference, although I would not have a problem going to UT if I really had to.

Well, it’s still worth a try to ask directly. The worst they can say is what you think they will say, but you never know - you might be surprised. A&M and UT are both great schools, but have very different environments. If you feel really comfortable at A&M, you might not be very happy at UT.

Now that I think about it though, haven’t you had to commit to one or the other by now?

Yeah I’m not quite sure if the situation I’ve been is technically allowed, but I’ve decided to go for A&M now. I figure that as long as I keep focused and have a light course load I can guarantee to myself that I keep the grades to get into Chem E, I might even try to double major if I can handle it. I think Chem E and Physics would be a nice combination since I love the physics and need the Chem E. All I need to do now is find some housing down there…
